Birmingham City University – City Centre Campus Redevelopment

One of the many benefits of building a long-term relationship with a client is being able to share expert knowledge. It also allows us to hit the ground running because we understand and share our client’s core values. This really pays off when it comes to delivering large scale projects against a backdrop of complex technical challenges, pressing project programs and political influences.

The City Campus redevelopment at Birmingham City University (BCU) in the heart of Birmingham’s Curzon Quarter is a good example of this. AtkinsRéalis were appointed to provide a diverse set of consultancy services on three key phased projects. The brief was to deliver a new campus that not only provided space efficiency savings but could also accommodate future growth and demand.

The project represents around £260m of capital investment in the Eastside Locks regeneration area in Birmingham. This meant we were working with a challenging capital budget and tight deadlines to meet both BCU’s strategic aims and those politically imposed during the redevelopment of Birmingham. Our successful long-term relationship with the client certainly helped us deliver these challenging projects.

The Parkside Building was the first to be completed. This multiple award-winning £260m development enables collaboration between creative industries and business to drive growth. It features world-class teaching, film, radio and television studios. The second phase was The Curzon Building, a state-of-the-art home to business, English, law and social sciences students. The development also included the restoration of a Victorian pub, The Eagle and Ball, now a unique new home to the Students Union. The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire was the third completed projected and provides a world class facility for the digital age. The building is architecturally stunning and acoustically magnificent.

Our work included cost management, third party interfaces and construction design and management (CDM). Our project champions helped BCU implement Level 2 BIM, the BSRIA soft landings framework, renewable energy strategies, and attainment of BREEAM Excellent on all projects.

Close and early collaboration with BCU and a wide consortium of designers and specialists has delivered flexible, cutting-edge teaching environments to meet the rapidly changing demands of the higher education sector. Knowing the industry and using our experience in similar projects allowed us to provide accurate advice on costs. And continuity of personnel throughout the campus development meant we could learn from every design phase of every project.

We supported BCU’s long-term strategic focus on efficiency in facilities management and its building information modelling strategy.
