We’re working with Bristol-based electric aircraft company Vertical Aerospace to help it develop an air taxi that could revolutionise the way that we move around our urban areas – with initial services to start in 2024.
The company is one of only a few companies in the world to have built and flown two full scale, fully electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. If successful, it could mean electric aviation, available for everyone.

AERALIS
The ultimate aim for the client: deliver the world’s most effective training to the world’s best pilots.
And our role on this exceptional project is to advise on the design of the AERALIS jets, exploring different design concepts for the fuselage and its interchangeable components.
For now, we are doing design, structures, systems and integration work and expect to bring in many more skills along the way. In the near future, we will also be developing a digital twin, which means that we will be using advanced digital engineering tools to create a virtual representation of the aircraft that can be assessed and modified before they’re built in real life, reducing programme risk and saving both time and cost.

This project is unique in the UK – it’s the first whole jet aircraft since British Aerospace’s EAP demonstrator in the mid-80s and it is a once-in-a-career opportunity to work on whole aircraft design.

Chief Systems Engineer, AtkinsRéalis and AERALIS’ Acting-Chief Engineer
In late 2021 we entered into a strategic agreement with the UK’s Electric Aviation Group (EAG). This collaboration will accelerate the development of new, sustainable aviation technologies as EAG advances its plans for H2ERA, a zero emission, regional aircraft fuelled by hybrid hydrogen-electric technology.
The partnership offers EAG ready access to SNC-Lavalin’s extensive aerospace capabilities and resources as it progresses its proprietary hybrid electric and hydrogen technologies. Its H2ERA aircraft is on track to launch in 2030, making it the world’s first true zero 90-seater regional aircraft.

We’ve helped Airbus move closer to zero emission flight through our involvement in an innovative hybrid-electric flight demonstrator.
We provided requirements management and mechanical and electrical engineering support for the aircraft manufacturer’s E-Fan X project, which tested some of the new technologies that could transform aviation.
Our role in this flagship project, which was a collaboration between Airbus and Rolls-Royce, was to consider the safety implications of embracing hybrid-electric technologies. In the E-Fan X test aircraft, one of four jet engines was replaced with a 2 MW electric motor. That was powered by a generator, and additional energy was stored in batteries.

We’re working with the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MOD) to ensure its Viking T1 aircraft are safe to fly. Atkins is the Air System Coordinating Design Organisation responsible for supporting the type airworthiness of the two-seat glider that is used to provide air experience and training for Royal Air Force Air Cadets.
The Viking T1 is an eight-metre-long, two-seat glider that is used to help young cadets take their first steps in the aviation industry. We were appointed by the Ministry of Defence to support the type airworthiness of this fleet of aircraft. Together with Gama Aviation, we help keep the 52 air experience and training gliders in the sky.
