Keeping people moving

Transformative transit projects are never without complexity, and the East Harbour Transit Hub is no different.

One of the key accomplishments has been widening the Eastern Avenue Rail Bridge to accommodate two new tracks for future service without impacting live GO Transit and VIA Rail trains travelling on adjacent tracks. To achieve this, our Alliance has worked collaboratively to design and complete work in stages while employing state-of-the-art technology to keep our team and the travelling public safe.

Thanks to careful planning and our excellent team, our Alliance has made great progress, and we can start to see the East Harbour Transit Hub take shape.

"The Metrolinx team is proud to work with partners in government and industry to deliver more transit options, reduce commute times, and ease congestion. East Harbour station will be one of the most important nodes on the region's transit map. It will connect the Ontario Line to an expanded GO Transit network in a way that will completely re-shape how we move through Toronto and beyond”Michael Lindsay, President and CEO, Metrolinx.

Investing locally

Making sure local businesses benefit from the work we do in their community is an important project objective. Our Alliance procurement team tracks the purchase of supplies and services sourced within the GTA and within the project’s “hyper-local” community, which includes businesses within a 10-kilometre radius from the project site. We also track how much business is sourced through small and medium-sized enterprises and those owned by equity deserving groups.

This is tracked as part of a Local Employment and Procurement KPI, which measures the team’s success in providing employment opportunities to women and racialized peoples and the direct costs spent with local businesses, small and medium enterprises, social enterprises and those led by Equity Deserving Groups.

Health and safety

We have a mission to create a new standard of safety on rail and transit projects across Toronto. While our approach to achieving this vision is multi-faceted, it begins with a culture of personal commitment to protect ourselves and each other by placing safety at the heart of all we do. This commitment not only extends to working safely but also includes a psychology-based approach encouraging everyone to speak up, recognize positive behaviours and embrace new ways of working for the protection of all. In combination with technology that helps solve some of the greatest challenges on busy construction sites, like human machine interface, and participation in safety forums designed to share best practices and lessons learned with other project teams, we are proud to support Metrolinx by enhancing health and safety measures.
