When the Colorado Army National Guard (COARNG) needed a state-of-the-art Readiness Center to support the 100th Missile Defense Brigade (MDB) at Peterson Air Force Base, they faced the challenge of balancing complex technical requirements with government required sustainability goals. The facility, responsible for 24/7 operations of the U.S. Army’s ground-based midcourse missile defense system demanded secure, high-performance infrastructure capable of lasting 50 years while meeting stringent military standards.
Our team stepped in to deliver a solution that not only met, but exceeded, these needs. Through close coordination with the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), the Colorado Construction & Facilities Management Office (CFMO) and experts from the installation, we streamlined the design to align scope and budget, ultimately reducing the building’s footprint by 5,000 square feet without sacrificing functionality. The result? A more efficient, sustainable and secure facility that supports the COARNG’s vital mission.
We designed the Readiness Center to meet the unique demands of the 100th MDB, ensuring it could support the unit’s continuous operations from Colorado, New York and Alaska. Our design integrates office space, training areas, secure communications infrastructure and weapons storage, all while complying with the latest in energy performance and sustainability standards. The facility is expected to achieve LEED V4 Silver Certification, demonstrating our commitment to reducing environmental impact without compromising the operational effectiveness of the facility.
Sustainability at the Forefront
COARNG’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency was a driving factor in our design approach. Our mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineers conducted multiple Life Cycle Cost Analyses (LCCA) to optimize the facility’s future use of renewable energy. We incorporated a geothermal heating and cooling system into the design, reducing long-term energy consumption and utilized LED lighting throughout to lower operational costs. These measures ensure the facility meets American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standards for high-performance green buildings.
Key Features
- Secure information systems capabilities
- Weapons vault and OCIE storage
- Classrooms, offices, breakrooms and restrooms with showers
- Fire detection and alarm systems, storm drainage, parking and site improvements
- Backup/emergency generator for uninterrupted operations
Designed for a minimum 50-year lifespan, the Readiness Center adheres to the Unified Facilities Criteria and meets the Department of Defense’s Minimum Antiterrorism Building Standards. Our site development and utility designs comply with Peterson SFB’s strict Facility Standards as well as all applicable International Building Code (IBC) requirements, ensuring the facility is resilient, functional and secure for decades to come.
This project showcases our expertise in military and federal government design standards and highlights our ability to deliver comprehensive, stand-alone structures that prioritize safety, sustainability and operational excellence. By integrating advanced design principles and cutting-edge energy solutions, we’ve created a forward-thinking facility that will serve the COARNG’s mission for years to come.
