The Cheshire Energy Hub project was established to identify and assess low carbon energy solutions capable of supporting the Northwest of England’s transition to Net Zero, while unlocking regional investment and economic growth. Working as part of the Invest Net Zero Cheshire consortium, led by the Cheshire Energy Hub and Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnerships, AtkinsRéalis provided specialist low carbon technology advice to help shape a credible, investment ready decarbonisation roadmap for the region.

Our role
AtkinsRéalis provided low carbon technology technical counsel and engineering expertise to support concept development, feasibility assessment and stakeholder engagement. Our team focused on two priority areas (heat decarbonisation and low carbon fuel supply and refuelling), to help the client understand which technologies offered the greatest potential impact, deliverability and commercial viability across the region.
We worked closely with stakeholders from local authorities and industry, attending and supporting workshops and meetings to ensure practical, regulatory and commercial challenges were fully understood and reflected in the final recommendations and outline business cases.

Solutions assessed
As part of the programme, AtkinsRéalis helped identify, develop and assess the technical feasibility of a broad range of low carbon concepts, including:
- Local heat networks
- Industrial manufacturing site heat decarbonisation
- Waste heat utilisation for greenhouses
- Green hydrogen production
- Food waste anaerobic digestion to biogas
- Waste fleet decarbonisation
- Hydrogen refuelling hubs
- Sustainable multi‑vector refuelling hubs, including Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles
Each option was assessed in collaboration with the client and stakeholders to support informed decision making and prioritisation.
