The West Island Line (WIL) is an extension of the existing Island Line from Sheung Wan to Kennedy Town. It is about 3 kilometers long with three railway stations at Sai Ying Pun (SYP), Hong Kong University (HKU) and Kennedy Town (KET). The construction works commenced in July 2009.
The WIL was commissioned on 28 December 2014 with HKU and KET Stations. SYP Station (except Ki Ling Lane Entrance) was opened to the public on 29 March 2015 with its Ki Ling Lane Entrance opened on 27 March 2016. AtkinsRéalis was appointed by Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited (MTRCL) to provide end-to-end design services from feasibility design phase till construction phase.
Feasibility design
AtkinsRéalis’ involvement began when MTRCL commissioned a feasibility study to extend the Island Line from Sheung Wan Station to Kennedy Town, located in Western Hong Kong Island. Due to the high level of development and traffic in the corridor, engineering solutions were complex. Therefore, studies were carried out to identify a series of route and station options evaluated based on multiple criteria, including patronage, costs, urban renewal potential, land resumption, railway operation, engineering, planning, environmental, risks, safety and reliability.
Detailed design
Following the feasibility study, AtkinsRéalis was commissioned as the lead consultant in a joint venture to undertake multidisciplinary design for two deep-cavern stations at Sai Ying Pun and University, station entrances, associated twin rail tunnels and ventilation buildings, providing project and design management, civil & structural engineering services including tunnel and geotechnical, traffic and highways, station planning and system assurance.
Independent checking engineer
After completion of detailed design, AtkinsRéalis was tasked with performing Independent Engineer checks on all aspects of the temporary works design, including caverns, adits, overrun tunnels, cross passages, and associated structures such as shafts, temporary footbridges, and re-provision works. Our team for this project was made up of specialists from various engineering disciplines, including geotechnical, civil, structural, drainage, highways, and railways, so as to ensure that the design was implemented correctly and any issues that arise during construction were promptly addressed.
