Delivering infrastructure, venue engineering and legacy planning for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games required both the creation of a world-class venue portfolio and the transformation of a former industrial area into a lasting urban district.
Supporting one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure and regeneration programmes, AtkinsRéalis contributed to the delivery of permanent infrastructure and Olympic venues while helping prepare the site for its long-term legacy. Beyond the Games, the programme enabled the regeneration of East London, creating new communities, public spaces and infrastructure that continues to serve residents today.

The challenge
The scale and complexity of the Olympic Park presented significant technical and environmental challenges. The site required extensive remediation of contaminated land while protecting sensitive ecological and heritage assets, including the long-term preservation of Greenwich Park. At the same time, venues needed to meet strict international sporting requirements and integrate seamlessly with temporary infrastructure across multiple locations. The program demanded coordination across disciplines and stakeholders, all within immovable global event deadlines, where delays were not an option.

Our role
We supported the London 2012 programme through two distinct but complimentary roles. For the Olympic Delivery Authority, we helped design and deliver the permanent structure required for both the Games and their long-term legacy, including roads, bridges, utilities, site remediation and enabling works across the Olympic Park. Separately, as the Official Engineering Design Services Provider to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), we provided engineering expertise for temporary venues and the transformation of existing venues into competition-ready environments. Our work included venue requirements development, procurement support, resilience studies, utilities coordination, access planning and physical security considerations to help ensure safe, secure and successful Games operations.

The impact
The successful delivery of London 2012 demonstrated the value of integrating permanent infrastructure and legacy planning with the complex operational requirements of a global sporting event. The programme transformed a former industrial landscape into a thriving new district while enabling the safe and efficient operation of Olympic and Paralympic venues across London. Many of the approaches developed for venue transformation, temporary infrastructure and operational resilience have informed the planning and delivery of subsequent Olympic and major international events.
