Protos energy recovery facility (ERF) is a joint development by Encyclis and Biffa with plans to generate up to 49 MW of electricity from non-recyclable waste.
Carbon capture, also known as Carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) is a technology that isolates carbon dioxide (CO₂) from industrial emissions to prevent it from entering the atmosphere, helping mitigate climate change.
Protos ERF was selected as a preferred option for potential UK Government funding under the government’s carbon capture cluster sequencing programme. Plans to develop a carbon capture plant with a capacity of 380,000 tonnes per year at the facility are underway. The facility is part of the HyNet industrial decarbonisation cluster.

Client challenge
Full-scale carbon capture and storage is still at an early stage both in the UK and globally, and with no reference deployments of CCS in the Energy from Waste sector, Encyclis sought engineering and commercial certainty in the design ahead of key investment decisions.

Our role
AtkinsRéalis were engaged by Encyclis as an independent Technical Advisor to support with the successful development of the Protos CCS project. We provided Encyclis with an expert opinion on the quality of the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) deliverables, the overall design and produced a ‘Red, Amber, Green’, or RAG, assessment detailing key issues.
AtkinsRéalis further provided a detailed check of the heat and mass balance using validated in-house models of amine carbon capture systems to verify the core process design.
In addition to a review of FEED deliverables, we also provided an assessment on the availability and reliability of the plant to meet performance guarantees. This assessment encompassed front end materials handling, fuel and recyclate sorting, steam production, power train and CCUS sections of the plant.

Key outcomes
Through close collaboration with the client and design teams, key project risks and mitigations were clearly identified. AtkinsRéalis’ expert review of the engineering outputs provided assurance on the quality and robustness of the FEED deliverables. Combined with an independent assessment of the project’s commercial considerations, this gave the client a comprehensive view of project status, risks and practical mitigation strategies.
