Smarter working empowers us all to make the right decisions about where, when and how we work; optimizing the use of workplaces and technology, increasing efficiency and realizing savings. It improves productivity through a focus on outputs and enables a better work life balance for all.
The buildings we all work in are a critical part of this initiative. Our building surveying team have been working with Her Majesty’s Land Registry (HMLR) delivering professional technical and consultancy services to help develop smarter solutions across the HMLR estate.
AtkinsRéalis are supporting the delivery of facilities management professional services relating to the building fabric and space plans across the portfolio. Our building surveyors are predominantly acting as technical leads for the projects, supported by our design specialists, health & safety consultants, change managers and supply chain partners.
A significant stakeholder engagement and review process was undertaken throughout the process to ensure maximum user buy-in and deliver best outcomes for HMLR. Success, as with any project, is built on understanding and working with client teams to define and develop the brief. In this instance HMLR wished to develop and produce an agile working environment with the digital data and technology (DDaT) team.
The process followed includes:
- Initial design briefing and stakeholder engagement to determine current and aspired working practices, consideration of technological advance such as virtual desktop and HMLR future estate planning
- Production of concept design information
- Design review including workshops with DDaT to understand specific requirements and maximize stakeholder buy-in
- Production of test-fit options plans for discussion and refinement
- Provision of budget estimates and furniture quotes working with HMLR framework providers.
Developed designs were completed setting out full proposals for both Seaton Court (Plymouth) and Durham offices. Specialist change management services provided by AtkinsRéalis focused on maximizing the take-up of agile and collaborative working. We used a mapped process to review and assess the success of the project.
We provided design and project management services to completely refurbish the proposed trial space area, working alongside HMLR teams to ensure creation of a space that fulfilled the requirements. Smarter solutions for a smarter future.

This has allowed us to move away from traditional options to those that ensure that our teams are more effective and efficient, especially though developing ‘new ways of working’ including better collaboration, space sharing and genuine flexibility.
