Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (Hong Kong section), Hong Kong

AtkinsRéalis was commissioned by MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL) to provide preliminary design, detailed design and associated works for this Hong Kong-Mainland cross-boundary link. The construction works commenced in 2010. The Express Rail Link was opened to the public on September 23, 2018.

Preliminary design

AtkinsRéalis, in joint venture with Arup, carried out the preliminary design for the Express Rail Link tunnels and associated structures from Mai Po to West Kowloon. The new link connected Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), with a new terminus station constructed in West Kowloon.

In addition to 26km of tunnel, the project included eight ventilation buildings, two ventilation adits and six ventilation shafts, an Emergency Rescue Station, Shek Kong Stabling Sidings with an integrated first line maintenance facility and other associated buildings and facilities.

We provided multidisciplinary services including tunnelling, geotechnical engineering, structures, traffic, utilities and drainage, alignment and design of auxiliary structures.

In order to provide a fully integrated design, AtkinsRéalis, with specialist and sub-consultants, co-located in a dedicated project office with MTRCL and the other package consultants. The project required an aggressive design and construction programme to meet the operating date. AtkinsRéalis responded by mobilising resources both in Hong Kong and from overseas to meet the challenge, including arranging regular technical reviews of the design by recognized experts and an Independent Expert Panel comprising world-renowned experts in the field of ground movements, rock engineering, hydrogeology and soft ground tunnels to support in the approvals process with Authorities.

Detailed design

AtkinsRéalis carried out detailed design for the Express Rail Link as lead consultant for the Southern Section and sub-consultant of Northern Section.

The appointment included architectural works, civil and structural engineering, MEP, and specialist services, such as system assurance and alignment studies. The tunnels were constructed by a combination of drill and blast, tunnel boring machine (TBM) and cut-and-cover techniques, accommodating trains that will operate at speeds up to 200kph within the tunnels.

On completion of the detailed design, AtkinsRéalis was responsible for the preparation of the contract drawings, specifications and reference information for five works contracts: two for initial works packages and three for tunnelling works packages.

AtkinsRéalis continued to support MTRCL throughout the construction phase. The construction works commenced in 2010. The Express Rail Link was opened to the public on September 2018.
