AtkinsRéalis and ICE continue the Beyond Engineering series to explore the future of airport mobility in the Middle East
Beyond Engineering was created to open up honest, practical conversations around the infrastructure challenges shaping the Middle East. It brings together voices from across the industry to examine how major infrastructure systems are evolving under increasing pressure from growth, complexity and rising expectations.
This year’s opening discussion focused on airports, a topic that touches millions of lives across the region every day.
Across the UAE, airports handle around 135 million passengers every year. Major hubs are operating close to peak capacity year-round, while passenger expectations around speed, connectivity and experience continue to rise. But the conversation quickly moved beyond terminals, runways and passenger numbers. Today’s airports are increasingly being viewed as integrated mobility ecosystems, connected to wider transport networks, economic activity, tourism, trade and urban development. Bringing the industry together
A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the importance of earlier collaboration and stronger alignment across the value chain. As infrastructure programmes become larger and more interconnected, successful delivery increasingly depends on how effectively organizations, authorities and partners work together from the outset.
Speaking during the session, James Bruce, Aviation Market Director, highlighted the growing importance of collective industry dialogue. The discussion also reinforced why platforms like Beyond Engineering matter. As the infrastructure landscape continues to evolve, creating space for open conversations across the industry becomes increasingly important in helping teams challenge conventional thinking, exchange practical insight and improve decision-making.
The conversations happening through this series are designed to help the industry think more collectively about those challenges and opportunities, while strengthening collaboration across the built environment ecosystem.
The session closed with a strong note that sustaining the region’s mobility ambitions will depend on closer collaboration between industry, authorities, and professional bodies to deliver infrastructure that is more connected, resilient, and future-ready.
