Alternatives energies and technologies
Decarbonizing Energy is the key to decarbonization of our global economies. Without clean energy, we can’t decarbonize transport, buildings or infrastructure and industry.
Ambitious Net Zero 2050 targets across the globe require a whole spectrum of solutions to decarbonize electricity and oil and gas use. There is no single solution that will decarbonize energy, and energy producers and users need to transition together.
Renewables and nuclear provide solutions for decarbonizing electricity but require coupling with effective storage solutions. Decarbonizing oil and gas usage requires the use of hydrogen or CCS solutions or transitioning users to electricity. Each of these solutions have their place and we can help customers select and deliver the right combination of solutions for their transition to Net Zero.
As a global engineering and project management consultancy, we have a wide range of professional, engineering, design and environmental services to offer our renewable energy clients across the globe.
Hydrogen
Hydrogen is an energy source that is flexible, accessible, and storable, and can play a key role in powering the global transition to net zero.
Working closely with our clients, we can reduce economic and technology risk through our deep understanding of low carbon hydrogen from production through to end use. Our low carbon technology specialists, and project and technical staff can support our clients throughout the project lifecycle in the development, engineering, design, construction and commissioning of hydrogen facilities, and the production, storage and distribution of clean hydrogen.
Clean methods of developing hydrogen are evolving all the time and include the production of hydrogen through electrolysis from renewable (green) or nuclear power (pink), or production via steam methane reforming with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) (blue). Our services include:
- Electrolysis – Green hydrogen project delivery
- Green ammonia project delivery
- Reforming – Blue hydrogen
We work with clients across the industrial, transportation and buildings sector to assess the potential of hydrogen in their decarbonization pathways. We have undertaken projects blending hydrogen with natural gas, as well as 100% hydrogen fuel switching assessments for industrial clients.
Renewables
To reach our global net zero targets, a significant component of our energy needs to be supplied through harnessing renewable energy.
As a global engineering and project management consultancy, we have a wide range of professional, engineering, design and environmental services to offer our renewable energy clients across the globe.
Our expertise covers offshore wind, onshore wind and solar. Our experts have supported clients in the engineering and construction of over 500 MW of solar projects ranging in size from 10 MW to 130 MW. We have been engaged in over 70 wind projects acting to support developers and as act as owners’ engineers.
Alongside our dedicated work force, we work in collaboration with a host of specialist sub-contractors and partners to ensure that projects are delivered to the highest quality.
We work across the entire net zero portfolio and take a ‘whole system’ approach, ensuring the development of a robust and secure energy system.
Energy Storage
Energy security and supply across international boundaries, combined with the global Net Zero challenge creates new demands on existing storage assets and drives the need to define, develop and implement new storage infrastructure. The development of large-scale energy storage space in underground facilities such as salt caverns and depleted oil and gas reservoirs as well as on surface in vessels is essential to the effective operation of the energy system providing both resilience and system balancing.
We are an innovative leader in network planning and renewable energy system integration. Our energy storage capabilities include EPCM projects, planning and studies, grid integration, project financing, conceptual and detailed design, project management, estimation and procurement. We have undertaken several sub-surface hydrogen storage projects for clients in Europe.
We are familiar with all types of technologies, from hydrogen or compressed air storage in salt caverns, to battery, to liquid air, to pumped hydro energy storage, and understand the pros and cons of each storage option for our customers.
Carbon Capture and Storage
Carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) utilises an integrated suite of technologies to reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions. CCUS involves the following steps: separating CO2 from a mixture of gases (capture); conditioning the captured CO2 to an export quality; transporting the captured CO2 by pipeline, trucks, rail or ships to a suitable site for utilisation (for instance cement curing or production of synthetic fuels); and/or deep geological storage. Although only a few commercial scale facilities are currently in operation, there is increasing demand for CCUS facilities and it is widely recognised that CCUS is an essential technology if we are to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions.
Our Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) front end study experience includes an extensive list of feasibility, conceptual design, due diligence and preFront End Engineering Design (FEED) studies. Our combined CCS Engineer Procure Construct (EPC), Owner’s Engineer, advisory and study experience enables us to bring ‘reality’ to the front end of a project. The knowledge, lessons learned and in-house CCS expertise means we can consider deliverability issues at an early stage of a project, thus significantly de-risking a project and potentially accelerating its development programme.
