The A14 is a vital road in the UK midland that carries high levels of commuter and trade traffic.
In 2015, a £1.5bn upgrade to the Cambridge to Huntingdon section of the route sought to improve its capacity and reduce congestion.
The project was making use of a wide range of technologies, from geographic information systems (GIS) to 3D modeling. But in a sector then only starting to embrace digital, much of this data remained siloed. Our pioneering approach to digital allowed the project to finally capitalize on this data. We built a centralized asset database which contractors could both use and contribute to, generating a ‘digital twin’ that represented the on-the-ground reality accurately, in real time.

How we made the difference
Highways England was missing a way to hand over useful, meaningful site data to contractors following a detailed design phase.
As a major design partner in the joint venture to deliver the A14 upgrade, our aim was to build a rigorous asset database not only for all contractors to use, but for Highways England to then receive on project completion. One they could use to plan essential maintenance work in the decades ahead.
The overall A14 upgrade program involved the digging and inspection of some 200 trial holes. These holes are essential to search and document existing underground utilities pipework. Our first step was to create a useful app that would help various site engineers dig these essential holes, and at the same time capture consistent and reliable data. Beforehand, this would have been a highly manual process: engineers had to record findings on a simple spreadsheet, take photos, and gather and store information using different software and storage methods, leading to substantial inconsistencies.

What we built
Our new map-based app meant that engineers could use their smartphones to pinpoint the exact location of their respective trial holes.
There was an appetite across the joint venture to work together: to understand what we needed to do to bring processes and people together through digital.
Engineers needed to tick the box and confirm what was expected at the trial hole, enter a new record, take a photo, complete a simple table, and upload it there and then to the cloud. Creating a single clean data source, in real time.
This app-based activity set in motion a positive evolution in terms of digital technology used on the rest of the program. Data sets and models evolved to the point the contractors could build from drawings, supported by 3D modeling, to visualize how all components fitted together. Highways England soon possessed a robust model that accurately described all their assets, plus a civil 3D model of the infrastructure, with the necessary data integrity that underpins both.
Why does it matter?
The A14 upgrade has played a key role in moving the digital journey along for the rest of the transportation industry.
Our app has since evolved to become a British Construction Industry Award-winning utilities app. Moreover, the A14 was the birthplace of technologies and processes now widely used on other UK transportation projects, such as the M25 junction 10 with the A3 at Wisley and the A57 Trans Pennine upgrade. These digital innovations have significant implications for the UK reaching its Net Zero CO2 target by 2050. More robust survey data leads to better decisions being taken, resulting in fewer materials being wasted, significant cost savings, and therefore a lower environmental impact.
