We're working with the UK's Ministry of Defence to ensure its Viking T1 aircraft are safe to fly.
AtkinsRéalis is the Air System Coordinating Design Organisation responsible for supporting the type airworthiness of the two-seat glider that is used to provide air experience and training for Royal Air Force Air Cadets.
The Viking T1 is an eight-metre-long, two-seat glider that is used to help young cadets take their first steps in the aviation industry. We were appointed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to support the type airworthiness of this fleet of aircraft. Together with Gama Aviation, we help keep the 52 air experience and training gliders in the sky.
Our work includes:
- Managing the contract as the Air System Coordinating Design Organisation (DO) and being the first point of contact for the MOD Delivery Team.
- Supporting structural repairs, fault investigations, obsolescence monitoring and integrity management
- Avionics and instrument upgrades, which are carried out by Gama Aviation
- Acting as design record custodian, with responsibility for managing the design records for the fleet throughout its life to ensure all alterations, repairs, and the justification for them is documented
- Conducting a periodic review of the maintenance schedule
- Carrying out usage and loads monitoring assessments to confirm the aircraft are operating within their capabilities

Complying with strict safety standards
To carry out the work, we must be registered as an approved organisation under the MOD's Design Approved Organization Scheme (DAOS), which assures the competence of providers involved in the design of aircraft systems and equipment. We're also required to work to military airworthiness regulations publications (MRP), which means our team must be able to interpret and apply the requirements to satisfy the demands of operating in a safety-critical environment.

Utilising digital technologies
To maximise efficiency, we're capitalising on our knowledge of the latest digital tools. In our role as design record custodian, we're digitised more than 30 years of repair records. We're using them to develop a digital twin, or digital representation, of the aircraft, so we can visualise the repairs that have been made to the Viking over the decades. That will help us identify recurring issues and more easily spot trends, which means we can prevent problems instead of responding to them. It will also save time and costs and create a more intelligent and responsive organisation.
Strengthening existing partnerships
Importantly, the Viking T1 contract enables us to build on our existing relationship with the Ministry of Defence and Gama Aviation. Since 2014, AtkinsRéalis and Gama Aviation have provided aircraft safety certification and are currently conducting Military Airworthiness Reviews for the Royal Air Force and Joint Helicopter Command aircraft.
