The Howard Frankland Bridge is the most traveled bridge in Tampa Bay and is a major artery connecting the region’s two biggest economic centers on the west-central coast of Florida. Carrying 139,000 vehicles per day, traffic congestion can create a frustrating chokepoint for travelers between Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
The Howard Frankland Bridge is a three-mile, eight-lane bridge on I-275 spanning across Old Tampa Bay between St. Petersburg and Tampa, Florida. Construction to build a new, enhanced bridge to address present and future travel needs began in fall 2020 as part of the $865.3 million project. The original bridge, built in 1959, will be demolished.
The new bridge will feature four general purpose southbound lanes and two express lanes in each direction, for a total of eight lanes. The existing southbound bridge lanes will be converted to northbound, providing four general purpose lanes for drivers heading from St. Petersburg into Tampa. A shared use path for bicyclists and pedestrians will also be built, and the foundations for the two northbound express lanes will support future rail transit. Nautical-themed features chosen by the public will be displayed at four scenic overlooks along the pedestrian path.
As the prime construction engineering and inspection (CEI) consultant, we are facilitating construction processes by partnering with the joint venture to assist in maintaining the rigorous schedule while upholding a quality product. Our main focus is to ensure the project is built per the plans and specifications provided by Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in the design-build contract.
This is one of the first projects to kick off FDOT’s historic multi-billion-dollar Tampa Bay Next program and the largest CEI services contract for AtkinsRéalis in North America.
Once complete, the new bridge will reduce travel times for commuters traveling between St. Petersburg and Tampa, while improving mobility and supporting current and future multimodal transit options throughout the Tampa Bay region.
