The past 18 months has been a tumultuous time for our clients facing many challenges such as the recent economic crisis and the introduction of regional rebalancing policies - in the Procurement Bill reform is due to be released later this year.
All of these factors heavily impact the social value movement which is why we continue to work with clients and supply chains with their own social value agenda.
With the introduction of UK legislation, clients are looking for support in understanding how to build their own business strategies and to best leverage impactful outcomes from their procurement activities.
Our response was to launch a dedicated social value advisory service aimed at helping both public and private clients with their own social value agenda. Since then we have witnessed significant growth with the service and team as well as an impressive social return on investment of almost double.
Our highly experienced Social Value team has supported in the change management, process creation and delivery with internal teams to continue to raise awareness of the positive impact they can make.
In fact two members of the AtkinsRéalis Social Value team have also been embedded into client’s businesses through secondment opportunities offering advisory services. Through project commitments and activities, the team supports local communities, invests in local people and protects environments.
Successes since launch
Throughout 2022, AtkinsRéalis’ Social Value team has welcomed new clients including BD Group, Northern Ireland Water, North Somerset Council and Hammersmith & Fulham Council.
By offering this new service, we have been able to support clients on some incredible projects, driving social value at operational level both within projects and frameworks. This includes successfully delivering social value commitments to clients such as Cardiff City Council, Legal & General, Westminster City Council and Bradford MBC.
The team has also developed some exciting partnerships with organizations to help make a positive impact in local communities, this has included members of staff donating volunteer time. Partners include Derventio Housing Trust, TutorMate, Neighbourly, Give an Hour and many more.
In partnership with Loop we have calculated that in 2022 our total Social Return on Investment was £421m which means that for every £1 spent there is £1.90 return to the local community.
This is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates the real need for guidance in this area for businesses looking to successfully implement social value programs.
This is born out further by the fact the social value service has evolved, and the team has expanded with headcount rising to 15 - 87% growth in headcount and still growing.
Looking to the Future
AtkinsRéalis’ Social Value team continues to support clients with their social value challenges as well as helping their own business engage and deliver on social value commitments. The team also continues to develop key partnerships to support the business in ensuring successful delivery against social value commitments.
Moving through 2023 is all about building on the foundations our team has created as we continue to embed social value into AtkinsRéalis. As we look ahead this year, particularly with the economic uncertainty and procurement reform, social value must not just remain a key focus but we need to ensure we can support our business and our clients throughout this period of continued change.
Social value will become an ever increasing need to justify the purpose as to why and where tax payer money should be spent.
But it’s clear the social value movement is gathering pace and the difference we can all make is both limitless and exciting if we create a culture to do so. AtkinsRéalis endeavours to continually educate project teams on the social value offering.
AtkinsRéalis is continuing to lead the way in social value aspiring to be a great exemplar and support peers on similar journeys.
