To improve mobility and reduce travel times across Florida, Brightline, the only private provider of modern, eco-friendly intercity rail in America, is expanding its operations to provide nonstop service between Miami and Orlando. Featuring trains traveling at speeds up to 125 miles per hour, the new service will transport passengers between the two cities in under three hours.
This 170-mile expansion connecting West Palm Beach and Orlando marks the second phase of Brightline’s plan to reimagine train travel in Florida. The first phase, which was completed in 2018, included the construction of a 67-mile route between Miami and West Palm Beach. Our team has been involved on the project from the beginning, helping Brightline ensure its trains meet Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and American Public Transportation Association (APTA) safety standards by managing their design and testing.
During both phases, we performed design reviews for all critical train systems. These design reviews included First Article Inspections (FAI) and component qualification testing, which featured fire testing, seat crash dummy tests, car body structure tests and more. We reviewed all testing procedures, managed the tests and corrective measures, approved the final test reports and submitted documentation to FRA, as necessary. We also audited the System Safety Program and related documentation, including the preliminary hazard analysis, hazard tracking log and safety-related system Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) to mitigate hazards during operation. As part of these design reviews, our team developed a matrix to ensure regulatory compliance and industry best practices were followed. In addition, we performed resident inspections of the trains at the contractor’s facility and provided direction, tracked action items and ensured the trains were compatible with Brightline’s stations and maintenance facilities.
In Phase 2, Brightline sought new designs for passenger seats, interior panels and train cars featuring low floor boarding. Our team managed the creation and certification of these new designs along with overseeing trainset qualification and vehicle track interaction (VTI) testing. To help create an exceptional travel experience for passengers, we also integrated and installed Starlink by SpaceX, a high-speed, low-latency satellite broadband service, on all trainsets.
Our work has helped Brightline develop world-class, luxury passenger trains that have received industry awards for safety. In April 2022, they became the first train company worldwide to receive the WELL Health-Safety Rating for Facility Operations and Management from the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI). Brightline’s trains received this designation because they met up to 15 operational protocols, including, but not limited to: safety features, air quality and cleaning and sanitization procedures.
Brightline’s service between Miami and Orlando will help remove more than three million vehicles from Florida roadways annually and reduce carbon emissions by 75 percent per passenger mile compared to traveling by car.
