Located in Shanghai Xintiandi commercial district where three subway lines meet here, the Roof project covers an area of around 45,000 square meters, seeking to become a home to landmarks, multi-functional offices, commercial centre and urban open spaces.
This project was designed by Jean Nouvel. He is one of the most creative architects in the world and also a winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The Roof is his first completed work in China, and the first light-and-shadow architectural work in China.

Our team in China focused on delivering people-oriented results in the whole design process. Based on the WELL Building Standard, the project integrated ten dimensions including water air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind, and community, to explore a seamless connection between people and buildings with infinite joyfulness.

To embrace a clear sight view of sceneries, highly transparent glasses were adopted in façade design during the process, while comprehensive studies were conducted to balance the experience of direct sunlight by subtilizing and adjusting the width of the facade, the gap between each unit, and the angel of external shading louvres, etc.

Due to its prime location in central business district, our team was expected to make the most use of every single piece of the area to provide a centralized and condensed space for business to operate. Therefore, we came up with the idea as a first mover to place the outdoor unit of hybrid automatic voltage control (HVAC) in the basement with sufficient approaches to allow smooth air circulation.

Computerized Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was utilized to simulate and verify several outdoor units under different operating and environmental conditions to avoid cross-interference by surrounding airflow changes.

We created an engineering model to simulate the wind direction of all seasons throughout the year from the building’s air exhaust vent to verify the impact on the surrounding environment.
This project was completed in 2021 and has been in use ever since.
