The Doha Metro forms an integral part of Qatar’s 2030 vision and was a key part of the infrastructure for the FIFA World Cup 2022. Phase 1 of the Doha Metro consisted of 5 packages totaling approximately 65km of tunnel and 32 underground stations. AtkinsRéalis was employed as the preliminary designers for QVDC JV on Red Line and the preliminary and lead detailed designers for ALYSJ JV for Gold Line.

Our role
AtkinsRéalis was employed as the preliminary designers for QVDC JV on Red Line and the preliminary and lead detailed designers for ALYSJ JV for Gold Line. For Red Line South, we were responsible for the multi- disciplinary design as well as functional planning of tunnels, shafts and track alignment design. In addition, we provided expert advice on all fire and life safety issues in establishing the appropriate fire strategy for the stations and tunnels. On the Gold Line, AtkinsRéalis’ works included architectural design, station planning and structural designs for all the stations and stabling yards, design of twin bore tunnel, geotechnical analysis and site investigations, site monitoring of AGI works, design of excavation support, fire and life safety strategy, alignment design, support of the client’s requirements, management and systems assurance as well as additional works for mechanical and electrical building services design.

Scheduling
Doha Metro was awarded with ambitious timescales built into the contracts, particularly given that these were the first metro lines to be built in Qatar.
Collaboration
A collaborative approach was taken with the end-client to ensure they were satisfied with the elemental design delivery.
Safety rerformance
Safety in the design was considered with safety registers and safety, health & environmental boxes used for all drawings and design submissions. Regular discussions were held with the contractor on how to enhance design proposals and ease construction risk.
