Expanding diagnostic capacity for communities across Dorset
AtkinsRéalis is supporting University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) in the delivery of a new CT and MRI scanning facility at Poole Hospital, helping to increase diagnostic capacity and support the Trust's wider transformation of healthcare services across Dorset. The facility, due to open in February 2027, will provide dedicated imaging services in a purpose-built environment designed to meet growing patient demand.
Supporting a changing healthcare network
The project forms part of UHD's wider strategy to develop Poole Hospital as a key diagnostic hub within the Dorset healthcare system. Alongside other investments in diagnostic services, including a new endoscopy facility, the development will strengthen access to essential diagnostic testing and support earlier diagnosis for patients across the region.
By creating additional capacity for CT and MRI services, the facility will help improve patient pathways while supporting the Trust's long-term vision for a more efficient and connected healthcare network.
Delivering modern healthcare infrastructure in a constrained setting
Located within the Poole Hospital estate, the project is being delivered in a complex and space-constrained environment. The existing hospital site has evolved over many years, with limited opportunities for expansion within the current estate. To overcome these challenges, the new facility is being constructed on land opposite the main hospital site on Longfleet Road, following the demolition of the existing, ageing facility current sited there, allowing additional healthcare infrastructure to be delivered while minimising disruption to day-to-day hospital operations.
The new facility will also enable existing clinical accommodation to be repurposed and modernised, helping the Trust make the most effective use of its estate while continuing to enhance services for patients.
Using modern methods of construction
The facility is being delivered using modular volumetric construction, with much of the building manufactured off site before installation on location. This approach supports a more efficient construction programme, reduces activity within the live healthcare environment and helps minimise health and safety risks associated with traditional construction methods.
As part of the project, AtkinsRéalis has also supported the Trust with the delivery of a new electrical substation to provide the infrastructure required to power the specialist diagnostic equipment housed within the facility.
Our role
AtkinsRéalis has been involved from RIBA Stage 2 onwards, supporting the development of the procurement strategy, contractor procurement process and the progression of the project through design and construction. Our role includes NEC Project Management, NEC Supervisor and Cost Consultancy services, delivered in close collaboration with UHD's Capital Estates team.
Having successfully guided the project through RIBA Stages 3 and 4, AtkinsRéalis is currently supporting Stage 5 delivery, helping UHD realise its vision for enhanced diagnostic services and a more resilient healthcare estate for communities across Dorset.

The new CT MRI Unit will create additional capacity that will have a really positive impact on our patients by helping staff see them quicker.
Being located across the road from the current facility means future appointments in the new unit will still be really convenient for patients and staff, while ensuring minimal disruption to the wider hospital during the building phase. We’re incredibly excited about the new unit and can’t wait to start welcoming patients.
