1910s
Our company was formed by Arthur Surveyer in 1911, following a distinguished career in the Canadian Department of Public Works.
As a world-leading engineering professional services and project management company, our heritage of delivering excellence stretches back over a century.
Our roots trace back to two formerly separate companies: SNC-Lavalin, and Atkins
In its early days, the precursor to SNC-Lavalin was formed by Arthur Surveyer in 1911, following a distinguished career in the Canadian Department of Public Works. By the early 1920s, it had already become one of Montreal’s leading engineering service providers for power projects. This success was built on two qualities: a passion for providing high-quality technical studies and objective expert counsel, and a rigorous work ethic dedicated to creating value.

1910s
Our company was formed by Arthur Surveyer in 1911, following a distinguished career in the Canadian Department of Public Works.
1920s
By the early 1920s, it had already become one of Montreal’s leading engineering service providers for power projects.
1930s
By the late 1930s we expanded. Emil Nenniger and George Chênevert joined forces and laid the foundations of SNC. During the same decade the Lavalin story began with Jean-Paul Lalonde and Roméo Valois coming together in 1936 to form Lalonde, Valois International Limited. Meanwhile, in the UK, Sir William Atkins was setting new standard of excellence and revolutionizing engineering by founding W. S. Atkins & Partners.
1950s
Over the following decades, the company that originally bore Surveyer’s name transformed into SNC as it began to expand into diverse new sectors.
Bernard Lamarre joined Lalonde, Valois International Limited and reorganized the company as Lavalin.
1990s
SNC continued to grow in success and size, eventually merging with the Canadian engineering giant Lavalin in 1991. In the same decade, WS Atkins expanded its growth, bringing in Faithful & Gould to expand its capabilities.
2000s
In 2002, WS Atkins began trading under the name, Atkins.
2010s
In 2010, Atkins extended its footprint in North America by acquiring PBS&J, a Florida-based provider of engineering, planning, architecture, construction, environmental, and program management services.
In 2011, CANDU Energy Inc. was created when SNC-Lavalin purchased the commercial reactor division of Atomic Energy of Canda limited.
More major acquisitions followed in the new millennium, reinforcing this position: the leading global oil and gas service provider Kentz Corporation was acquired in 2014. Atkins came on board three years later, in 2017.
