AtkinsRéalis were appointed by U+I PLC to provide Principal Designer and CDM Advisor services for a 50,000sq ft Innovation Hub for start-up and SME’s to thrive. U+I in partnership with Plus X creates innovation hubs and healthy, effective workspaces offering specialist equipment (such as a prototyping lab and multimedia studies) supporting connection and collaboration to help accelerate growth and drive innovation. The Plus X Innovation Hub also champions education and skills whilst maximizing social impact through the provision of flexible café and exhibition spaces.
The design of the innovation hub includes a range of key sustainability factors from air quality, temperature control and humidity. A program of focused wellbeing events take place each week with yoga classes, mental health training and a dog-friendly policy to help reduce stress.
This transformational project creates a thriving space for local businesses, bringing tangible benefits to the local community and the city as a whole.
The Plus X project forms part of the comprehensive and wider regeneration program of work, that U+I in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council and the University of Brighton’s to transform this part of Moulsecoomb of which the Preston Barracks site forms part of.
The Preston Barracks development will deliver 369 new homes, including affordable housing, and 534 student bedrooms in managed halls of residence, meeting a widely recognized shortfall in the city.
AtkinsRéalis Safety services were involved throughout the main and varying sub projects from conception and detailed design, to demolition, installation of site wide infrastructure, construction of the Plus X Innovation Hub, Section 278 Works and development wide Landscaping.
With the student accommodation and residential elements being built by others at the same time as the construction of the Plus X Innovation Hub and Section 278 work, there has also been an incredible amount of contractor coordination to be managed on a site that only boasts one main exit and entry point onto the busy Lewes Road along with surrounding works by the University of Brighton and other neighboring developers. This was managed and chaired by AtkinsRéalis by holding weekly coordination meetings between all stakeholders to ensure good collaboration, coordination and to identify and manage any potential issues.
