The Brun-Way Highway is four-lane, 275 kilometer long (170 miles) critical transport corridor located in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Made up of 260 km of the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 2) and 15 km of Route 95, the Brun-Way is crucial for the movement of goods, residents and visitors across New Brunswick and throughout Atlantic Canada.
AtkinsRéalis’ Operations & Maintenance group has been responsible for operating and maintaining Brun-Way Highway since 2005, including managing snow clearing and salting operations, summer maintenance work like line-painting, vegetation management, asset inspections and cleaning, and the repair of assets such as bridges, pavements and guiderails. The AtkinsRéalis team also handles incident response, road patrols and traffic control.

Safe roads, rain or shine
The extreme weather conditions in New Brunswick present a serious challenge and can place infrastructure under significant stress. The implementation of VUEWorks enabled the team to more easily manage and track Brun-Way’s assets with its real-time GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping functionality. VUEWorks is designed to track conditions, minimize failure risks, optimize expenditure, and schedule maintenance for more than 125,000 physical assets including:

Instead of relying on centrally managed spreadsheets and email, VUEWorks allows teams to create and fulfill jobs directly over the platform – speeding response times. It also shows them the exact location of the task, reducing opportunities for error, and ensuring efficiency. In fact, since the introduction of VUEWorks, pavement inspection times have halved.
A solution tailored for New Brunswick
VUEWorks has been commercially available to infrastructure owners and operators for over 20 years and was acquired by AtkinsRéalis in 2017. To ensure it was suitable for use on the Brun-Way Highway, enhancements were made to the user interface and configuration options to reflect Brun-Way’s unique processes, workflow and reporting requirements.
Driving efficiency on the highway
Three years into leveraging VUEWorks, the results are already evident. Both summer and winter operations now track asset conditions, costs, and maintenance more effectively. VUEWorks implementation has streamlined processes, reducing or eliminating choke points and supporting decision-making and project management capabilities with historic condition data.
Staff has been extremely happy with the software – not only has it made their jobs easier, but it has been a source of empowerment for those who inspect and maintain the highway. In addition, decision-makers have real-time data and a full record of all maintenance activities, helping to guarantee that the highway continuously remains in excellent condition for many years to come.
