A rural, remote Colorado highway known for its scenic views and natural wonders was thoroughly weathered and eroded and some stretches had not seen major improvements in nearly 40 years. Standard pavement resurfacing methods could breathe new life into the roadway, but a new, sustainable process proved to be more cost-effective and better for the environment.
Colorado State Highway 149 (SH 149), also known as the Silver Thread Scenic Byway, is a rural road located in the southwestern part of the state that straddles the Continental Divide, grips steep canyon edges and winds below rocky cliff faces. Due to unpredictable and rapidly changing weather in the region, the road is often exposed to daily freeze and thaw cycles, large quantities of roadway salt, and frequent plowing resulting in numerous potholes, transverse fractures and alligator cracking.
Focused on sustainability, efficiency and safety, we are providing construction management, inspection and testing services on two segments of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) SH 149 Resurfacing Project. Spanning a total resurfacing area of more than 40 miles, support includes oversight, inspection and documentation of activities including guardrail safety improvements, pavement recycling, bridge improvements, hot mix asphalt leveling course, overlay and updated roadway striping.
The ongoing pavement resurfacing activities highlight an overarching strategy of sustainability through the use of the cold-in-place (CIP) recycling process. The CIP process reuses existing material, significantly reducing cost and environmental impacts when compared to other pavement rehabilitation methods. It utilizes a 300-foot-long train of equipment connected by hoses, hitches and cables that travels no more than 23 feet per minute, producing minimal emissions. Also, because CIP recycling reuses existing materials, the need to transport additional material is minimal. Further, the lack of material heating conserves energy and also allows for an optimal period of time to achieve compaction results.
Our team’s construction management, inspection and testing services for the SH 149 Resurfacing Project will serve to sustainably prolong a highway integral to residents as well as tourists enjoying the area’s scenic natural beauty. The project delivers vital safety and infrastructure upgrades for CDOT. As seasons of harsh weather continue in this remote region, the expansive striping, guardrail and bridge improvements and strong recycled overlay will maintain smooth travel for years to come.
