Overview
To alleviate traffic congestion and improve mobility and safety for those traveling in the Texas Hill Country and greater Austin area, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is building the Oak Hill Parkway, a state-of-the-art roadway that includes upgrades to US 290 and SH 71.
In December 2019, TxDOT awarded us a six-year, $20 million contract to provide General Engineering Consultant (GEC) services for the project. These services included scheduling, budgeting, administration and design, as well as construction oversight with a robust public outreach program to keep the affected community informed and engaged throughout construction.
The 7-mile project, which is expected to be completed in 2026, includes the construction of three US 290 mainlanes in each direction for through traffic, as well as two-to-three frontage road lanes in each direction for local traffic and business access. Five grade-separated intersections and two new flyovers between US 290 and SH 71 are also being constructed.
The community has been heavily engaged in this project for more than 25 years—since it was initially identified as a heavily congested corridor in need of solutions—and included in the region’s long-range transportation plan. During the planning phase, stakeholders participated in more than 100 community workshops, stakeholder meetings and public meetings/hearings, voicing their priorities for the corridor. Our team and TxDOT welcomed that input and responded by enhancing bicycle/pedestrian connectivity and requiring the contractor to preserve hundreds of trees within the project limits.
Alongside the roadway will be 14 miles of shared-use paths and 1.5 miles of sidewalks. To ensure the preservation of dozens of large trees cherished by the community, the project design was realigned to avoid several oak trees, which are reflective of the Texas Hill Country and greater Austin area. New tree planting, landscaping and other corridor aesthetics will also be installed as part of the project.
To engineer a better future for our planet and its people, we are also preserving the integrity of the Edwards Aquifer, which sits within the project’s limits and is a primary water supply for the region. Our team is implementing permanent stormwater best management practices, which include water quality treatment ponds, vegetative filter strips and permeable pavement, to significantly reduce the risk of aquifer contamination from pollutants found in stormwater runoff. In addition, we’re developing mitigation plans for other sensitive features discovered during construction.
