Empowering the UAE’s Next Generation to Tackle Water Scarcity
Bringing students, educators and industry together to develop solutions to one of the region’s most pressing sustainability challenges.
Water scarcity is one of the defining sustainability challenges facing the UAE and the wider region. Addressing it will require not only innovation in infrastructure and technology, but also a new generation equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence to develop solutions for the future.
Through our School of the Future programme, AtkinsRéalis is helping to build that capability early, connecting young people with real-world challenges and encouraging them to think differently about how engineering, technology and sustainability can shape more resilient communities.
In 2026, the programme challenged students across the UAE to explore the future of water, culminating in the School of the Future UAE Finals in Dubai, where 100 students presented their solutions to water scarcity and sustainable water management.

From the classroom to a real-world challenge
Throughout the academic year, nearly 1,000 students took part in the School of the Future programme, exploring water-related challenges and developing ideas to help communities use this critical resource more sustainably. Students from seven schools participated: DESS College, Jumeirah College, GEMS New Millennium, Kings School Al Barsha, Horizon International School, Dubai College and Al Ain Academy.
Working alongside AtkinsRéalis professionals, students applied classroom learning to real-world sustainability and infrastructure challenges. Their projects explored technology, engineering, education, behavioural change and community engagement, developing their ideas through research, collaboration and problem-solving.

Turning ideas into solutions
The programme culminated at the 2026 School of the Future UAE Finals, hosted at the University of Birmingham Dubai, bringing together 100 students to showcase their ideas. Rather than simply asking students to understand the challenge of water scarcity, the programme encouraged them to become part of the solution. Finalists presented their concepts to a judging panel comprising leaders from the finance, legal, development, design and sustainability sectors. The students were assessed not only on the creativity of their ideas, but also on their research, application, collaboration and ability to communicate their solutions.
The winning team from Jumeirah College, comprising students aged 12 and 13, developed an innovative water-saving concept for their school. Their solution combined robotics and advanced engineering principles to identify opportunities to reduce water consumption and improve efficiency. As one of the youngest teams in the competition, their achievement demonstrated what can happen when young people are given the opportunity, support and platform to apply their creativity to genuine societal challenges.

Building skills for the future
School of the Future is about more than finding a winning idea.
By connecting education with industry, the programme gives students early exposure to the types of challenges that engineers, designers and sustainability professionals are working to solve today.
Participants build capabilities in critical thinking, research, teamwork, problem-solving, innovation and communication, while gaining a deeper understanding of how STEM careers can contribute to addressing environmental and societal challenges. Educators are central to that journey. The 2026 programme also recognised the contribution of teachers who supported and mentored students throughout the year, demonstrating the importance of collaboration between schools, industry and educators in inspiring future talent.

Creating impact beyond the classroom
The 2026 programme comes at an important time for the UAE, ahead of the United Nations Water Conference being hosted in the country in December 2026. It provides a timely reminder that solutions to long-term sustainability challenges cannot be developed by industry or government alone. Young people must also have opportunities to engage with these issues, challenge established thinking and contribute their own ideas.
School of the Future creates a platform for that engagement while helping bridge the relationship between education, industry and the communities we serve.
