Gateshead Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) is a state-of-the-art NHS facility repurposed from a vacant retail unit in the Metrocentre, Gateshead.
The first of its kind in the North East, it was delivered through a partnership between Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The centre brings diagnostic care into the community, delivering a significant and growing number of tests for local people.
Opened in October 2024, this significant refurbishment project brings essential health diagnostic services into the heart of the community.
The £18.6m Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) provides the residents of Gateshead, Newcastle and the wider region with modern diagnostic services, and creating over 130 new jobs.
Delivered for QE Facilities on behalf of Gateshead Health and Newcastle Hospitals, the CDC provides imaging, respiratory investigations and cardiac investigations and acts as a major health hub for the area enabling a wide range of tests and services including:
- Scans such as Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ultrasound
- Heart tests, for example, echocardiograms (ECG), holter monitors and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
- Lung tests and sleep studies
- Blood tests
Accessibility to the CDC played an important role. Located in the Metrocentre, the site offers excellent transport links, free parking and extended opening hours (8am - 8 pm, seven days a week), allowing patients to attend appointments easily and avoid travelling to acute hospital sites.
The reuse of retail space for healthcare marks a UK first and has been recognised by NHS England as a flagship initiative for future development in high-footfall areas. Since opening, Metrocentre management has reported increased footfall and public transport use, equivalent to around 65,000 additional visits in the first eight months (Metrocentre reporting, 2025).
Local economic benefits were prioritised throughout the project, with over 90% of spending and materials sourced within 20 miles of the site. Additionally, 90% of the project team were local, residing within the areas served by Gateshead Health and Newcastle Hospitals.
AtkinsRéalis played a central role in the project, ensuring clinical and patient accommodation requirements were met. From securing funding and business case writing to delivering specialist engineering solutions, the delivery team’s expertise in finance, planning, project & cost management, technical design, and stakeholder engagement was pivotal in overcoming challenges and successfully delivering this project ahead of schedule through RIBA stages 0-7.
