Pembroke House creates a flagship facility for Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) transforming the educational experience for students.
The building has significantly contributed to the enhancement of learning outcomes and overall student experiences. The project's emphasis on hybrid collaboration has bridged the gap between remote and in-person learners, ensuring that all students have equal access to resources and participation opportunities. LSTM expects that evidence will demonstrate an improvement in student engagement, with more active participation in class discussions and group projects.
It not only enhances the physical infrastructure of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine’s campus, but also transforms the educational experience for students. The combination of advanced technological resources, flexible learning environments, and vibrant social spaces creates a holistic and inclusive setting that promotes academic excellence, personal growth and wellbeing.
The immersive learning experiences facilitated by Pembroke House have allowed students to engage with course material in novel and impactful ways. For instance, the use of 360-degree video captured in the field has enabled students to experience a patient journey through a Malawi hospital. This hands-on approach has deepened their understanding and increased retention of information, supporting better academic performance.
The social spaces host networking events, study groups, and informal gatherings, fostering a sense of community and belonging among students. These spaces provide students with invaluable opportunities to build relationships, share knowledge, and develop soft skills essential for their careers. This supportive environment is particularly beneficial for international students, helping them integrate more seamlessly into the academic and social fabric of the institution.

The cutting-edge educational facilities have already been put to good use. A digital focus
Pembroke House was the largest and most digitally-focused capital project undertaken by LSTM to date, and benefited from close engagement with the collaborative, hands-on project team. Stakeholder engagement was lengthy and detailed, to allocate space appropriately and design with current and future digital needs in mind. A detailed handover ensured LSTM knew how to get the most from their building.
The combination of advanced technological resources, flexible learning environments, and vibrant social spaces has created a holistic and inclusive setting that promotes academic excellence, personal growth and wellbeing. Opening hours were extended, at students’ request.
LSTM is at the centre of Liverpool’s thriving Life Sciences sector. Pembroke House additionally provides a bespoke future-focused centre to support the work of the Infection Innovation Consortium (iiCON), driving forward collaborative innovation at all levels. The centre acts as a catalyst to strengthen partnership working, bringing forward transformative technologies that will bolster the global response to infectious disease and strengthen pandemic resilience.
For students, this co-location means increased access to meaningful mentoring and networking opportunities, engagement events and access to potential employers.

In the past year, I had the opportunity to use the facilities in Pembroke House several times. In particular, I was able to use both the lecture spaces, like LEARN2, and the Immersive Suite in LEARN1. These have been extremely positive experiences for me and the students, and have greatly enriched and improved my teaching and their learning experience.
