Delivering building projects as part of an organization’s strategic vision can be a complex proposition. Costs, schedules and stakeholder expectations must all be managed. But there is a way to ensure that returns on capital investment can be maximized; it’s called project assurance and it can bring real confidence that the right solution is delivered.

Project assurance is one of the core services delivered by our integrated project and program management consultancy. Since 2014, we have provided program, project and commercial management services to the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for large programs across three states. These transformational projects involved the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York; a new National Campus in Orlando, Florida, and the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.

For the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, we were the program manager and owner’s representative. The five-year expansion program included a new retractable roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium, plus the redevelopment of the Louis Armstrong Stadium and the construction of an 8,000-seat Grandstand Stadium. The scope also included infrastructure upgrades, a parking garage and upgrades to the East Entrance. This major overhaul will allow an extra 10,000 fans to attend the US Open each day.

By utilizing good manufacturing practices negotiations, we helped the USTA achieve $19m in savings for the Arthur Ashe Stadium project. This resulted in a 12% reduction of the total cost.

The new 63-acre National Campus in Florida offers world-class playing, training and educational facilities. We provided program management, project management, cost estimating and workplace solutions services to the USTA on this innovative project. Facilities include 102 tennis courts of various surfaces (hard, green clay and red clay), a collegiate center with 12 courts, and a player development facility and lodge. In addition, there is an indoor tennis facility with six courts, two sunken bowl championship courts, plus a 46,833ft2 administration building and pro shop.

Through cost control, value engineering and workplace solutions, we were able to bring the project in on time and budget with a sizable contingency surplus. This allowed the USTA to add SmartCourt technology during the project and desired day two enhancements after project completion.

For the Lindner Family Tennis Center, in Ohio, we provided program management, cost management and estimating. The project involved the demolition of 25% of the existing center court and grandstand stadium to make way for the construction of a new five-story amenities tower. The new South Building provides new seating, various levels of indoor club dining, new television broadcasting suites and a robust back of house food service facility.

For all three of these significant projects, we provided an enterprise performance management (ePM) software solution to the USTA, utilizing Oracle Primavera Unifier. This solution helped the USTA capitalize on the large program effort to create standards for tracking and managing their project portfolio.

Project assurance has helped the USTA realize their strategic aims of creating better tennis facilities for players, coaches and spectators.
