Modular Cementation Systems for Stabilization of Nuclear Wastes

Eric Smith, Senior Project Manager

Worldwide, cementation is the most prevalent technology used to stabilize nuclear wastes against which other techniques are often compared.

Atkins has developed a suite of modular systems for use when a monolithic concept is neither necessary nor desirable, due to factors such as space, budget or schedule constraints or low waste volumes, etc.

This paper will concentrate on the challenges posed by the radioactive properties of wastes on cementation design and the systems that have been developed to address these challenges. The paper will also describe the benefits of portable and modular cementation systems compared to monolithic alternatives.

Value Found Within a Nuclear and Security U-233 Liability

Sarah Schaefer, Isotek Project Manager

The U-233 Disposition Project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been a decades long project. The original contract planned for the extraction of medical isotopes during the downblending of the U-233 inventory. When a viable medical isotope market was not found, the project’s mission became disposal of the inventory. As half the U-233 inventory was being direct dispositioned, a commercial entity approached DOE to purchase the remaining Thorium 229 (Th-229). The result of several years of discussions, negotiations and ultimately approval, is a unique public-private partnership that reduces the DOE’s project costs, while saving a valuable cancer treating isotope.

AusRail 2020

In a year like no other, it is more important than ever before to connect with colleagues and hear how the industry is planning for the future. Australasian Railway Association (ARA), AusRAIL Live & On Demand conference in 2020 will be held virtually to help connect with the people that matter most to the business. This year virtual event will be one of the most powerful and cost-effective ways to reach a wider target audience that allows several hundred more rail sector personnel to attend and potentially top-up sales pipeline. The online exhibition format remains the same as face-to-face with quality content and delegates - powered by AI networking that will ‘matchmake’ business brand to new and existing business contacts as well as provide access to make meetings with other exhibitors and attendees via the profile lists. Satellite social networking functions with limited capacity will take place in both Sydney and Brisbane offering opportunities to socialise in a COVID-safe gathering. We look forward to engaging in conversations with you and discuss how we can add value to your projects in more details. Get in touch with our experts today for a virtual or in-person meeting.

How alliancing and collaboration can transform Middle East construction

Live webinar

Construction clients are increasingly demanding better value from their investments and looking for effective solutions to reduce the time and cost it takes to deliver projects. Moving to more collaborative methods of contracting and project delivery is vital to eliminate waste seen through traditional construction and procurement processes, and to increase efficiency and quality.

In the post-Covid world, where cost pressures and competition will be tougher than ever, collaborative contracting models such as alliancing and partnering will ensure better results for construction clients in the Middle East.

Join an exclusive webinar from the SNC-Lavalin Group in partnership with MEED that examines how alliancing contract and increased collaboration can transform Middle East construction and engineering projects.

Be part of this live event on November 25, 2020 to learn about how the Middle East construction industry can move towards collaborative contracts. The webinar examines the opportunities for change across the construction value chain, underpinned by a collaborative approach.

SNC-Lavalin’s Resources 2020 ‘Tech Talks’ series

Find out how we’re getting fit for 2020 and beyond

In light of COVID-19, and the current market uncertainty, we as an industry still need to ‘keep the lights on’ by supporting safe and reliable production and operations. But now, more than ever, we need to factor an aging infrastructure, lowering carbon footprint, and how to further reduce CAPEX and OPEX without compromise.

To drive this agenda forward, we’ll be hosting a 5-part series of Tech Talks which will showcase how our multi-discipline engineering teams have helped our clients save millions through smart engineering. Topics cover:

  • Pipeline life extension – mountain or molehill?
  • Lower separator pressure = more barrels for no investment?
  • Structural inspection deferrals – during COVID-19 and beyond
  • Minimizing project investment by re-use of infrastructure: Atkins’ riser analysis methodology
  • Lowering carbon emissions from offshore installations: Platform electrification
