The Metronet project is part of the Western Australia Government’s 15-year railcar strategy and will significantly expand Perth's current heavy rail network. The project also aims to achieve that 50% of the new trains are manufactured locally, bolstering the local manufacturing industry and maximising jobs locally.
Catherine Li, CEO for SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business in Asia Pacific, said: “This is a significant project which will serve a growing public transportation network in Western Australia, creating jobs and bolstering the local manufacturing industry. We are also pleased to further broaden our footprint in Australia by leveraging on our strong capabilities and proven track record in delivering some of the most significant transport projects in Australia and internationally.”
“This project provides us the opportunity to form a strong working relationship with both PTA and Alstom that will produce benefits for all parties and cements SNC-Lavalin Atkins’ position as a leading rolling stock certifier,” added Matt Hinchcliffe, Director, Technical Services for SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business in Australia.
As the Independent Certifier, SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business will check and review that the rolling stock is being designed, manufactured and commissioned according to the AS7501 Rolling Stock Compliance Certification requirements. This work is a key step in facilitating the registration of the new trains for operation on the PTA and Arc Infrastructure rail networks. A total of 41 new EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) and 2 DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) trains will be certified.
The project has started and is expected to complete in 2029.
SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business was the Independent Certifier for a number of similar projects in Australia, including Queensland New Generation Rolling Stock programme and locomotive and wagons for Sydney Metro Northwest maintenance trains.
