SNC-Lavalin — in partnership with T.Y. Lin International and International Bridge Technologies — wins precast concrete award for Samuel De Champlain Bridge

Thursday 27 February 2020

MONTREAL: February 27, 2020 - The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) has given a 2020 Design Award to SNC-Lavalin, joint venture partners T.Y. Lin International and International Bridge Technologies, and bridge owner Infrastructure Canada for their work on Montreal’s Samuel De Champlain Bridge. The PCI Design Awards program encourages innovative approaches to using precast, prestressed concrete. It showcases sustainable, more cost-effective, aesthetically-pleasing, and quickly-constructed projects.

“SNC-Lavalin is honoured and appreciates the recognition from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute as being among the best and innovative users of concrete,” said Sevak Demirdjian, Vice-President, Major Projects, Eastern Canada. “The new Samuel De Champlain Bridge will be a defining landmark in Montreal’s skyline for generations. Our design partners and I valued the opportunity to support Infrastructure Canada during this ambitious and important project.”

Opened to traffic in 2019, the 3.4 kilometre Samuel De Champlain Bridge required 154,000 tonnes of concrete to complete the longest crossing over the St. Lawrence River. Fifty million vehicles per year pass over this bridge, making it one of the busiest in Canada. Using precast concrete helped with a challenging schedule from design to bridge-opening day. The project also met its environmental goals thanks, in part, to using precast concrete footings that reduced impacts on the river.

The project was carried out through a public-private partnership agreement with the Government of Canada and the Signature on the Saint Lawrence Group. SNC-Lavalin, along with partners ACS and HOCHTIEF, formed the Signature on the Saint Lawrence Group consortium. The Group carried out the design, construction, financing, operations and maintenance, and rehabilitation of the project.

This is not the only award SNC-Lavalin and our partners have received for this project. Other honours include a prestigious 2020 Engineering Excellence Honor award (and potentially more awards) from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), California; a 2019 Excellence in Structural Engineering award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA); the Steel Award 2019 for Excellence in Steel Construction granted by the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction; and first place in the Top 10 Bridges awards in North America in 2018 from Roads & Bridges magazine. Also in 2018, the Samuel De Champlain Bridge was the first large-scale bridge project in Canada, and the first Envision project evaluated in Quebec, to receive an Envision Platinum award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI).
