SNC-Lavalin congratulates OPG on Darlington’s Unit 2 return to service

MISSISSAUGA: June 4, 2020 - SNC-Lavalin commends Ontario Power Generation (OPG) on the successful and safe return to service of the CANDU® Unit 2 reactor at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. 

“Congratulations to Ontario Power Generation and all your employees on the hard work that contributed to this important milestone that is the return to service of Darlington’s Unit 2,” said Sandy Taylor, President, Nuclear, SNC-Lavalin. “Thousands of individuals and hundreds of vendors came together to collaborate and brought their best, showcasing Ontario’s nuclear advantage. The best practices and application of new tools will be a legacy for other life extensions to come.” 

“A big thanks to SNC-Lavalin’s nuclear team and our CanAtom joint venture partner Aecon for completing and maintaining the high quality and standards for the retube and feeder replacement (RFR) of 480 fuel channels,” said Bill Fox, Executive Vice-President, Nuclear at SNC-Lavalin. “The team worked diligently for three-and-a-half-years to safely execute the refurbishment activities on the unit ahead of the revised schedule.” 

Interesting facts about the Unit 2 RFR:

• 2,300 individuals onboarded over the three years, working over eight million hours. 
• 480 fuel channels and calandria tubes replaced. 
• Installed over 27 kilometres of pipe, including pressure tubes, calandria tubes and feeder pipe. 
• Nearly 4,000 radiographic welds completed.
• Over 300,000 fasteners, nuts, bolts, screws and washers.

The Darlington Refurbishment Project is one of Canada’s largest clean energy projects and an important step in Ontario and Canada’s fight against climate change. This 10-year undertaking will extend the lifetime of the 4-unit station by delivering at least another 30+ years of clean, low-cost and reliable energy to Ontarians. The continued operation of Darlington to 2055 will take the equivalent of two million cars off Ontario’s roads per year by avoiding significant greenhouse gas emissions.
