MONTRÉAL: July 28, 2023 - SNC-Lavalin, a fully integrated professional services and project management company with offices around the world, celebrates the inauguration of the first segment of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), between Brossard and Montreal Central Station. This 67 km and 26 station automated light metro system will service the Greater Montreal area.
The South Shore Branch, which is the first 16,6 km segment of the light metro system, will begin commercial operations on July 31, and cross the St. Lawrence River to link the South Shore with Montreal.
“We celebrate this milestone with all Montrealers and are honoured to have contributed to this historical project that will shape the face of transit in the city,” said Ian L. Edwards, President and CEO, SNC-Lavalin. The REM provides safe, reliable, green and convenient transportation that connects and improves mobility for millions of people — a project aligned with our vision of engineering a better future for our planet and its people.”
The REM is the largest public transit project undertaken in Québec in the last fifty years. Two consortiums were selected to design, build, operate and maintain the automated light metro system. SNC-Lavalin, as part of the NouvLR consortium, was awarded the prestigious engineering, procurement, and construction mandates. The Groupe des Partenaires pour la Mobilité des Montréalais (GPMM) consortium, which includes SNC-Lavalin, was responsible for delivering a complete automatic and driverless light metro system, including rolling stock and signaling, as well as operation and maintenance services for a period of 30-years.
SNC-Lavalin’s Engineering Services and Major Projects sectors played an important role in the design, and build of the REM, while Operations & Maintenance will begin work on the asset management portion of the project moving forward.
“I want to thank the hundreds of employees responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction work on this project since 2018. This project showcased our digital design expertise and state of the art project management systems to enhance performance and offer a value-added outcome for end-users,” said Bob Alger, President, Major Projects, SNC-Lavalin.
“With the operations and maintenance phase now commencing for a portion of the network, the project will create new, high-quality jobs. We are excited about beginning this first step in a long journey that will span several decades. Congratulations to the operations and maintenance employees who have been working on this project since 2018, and to all those employees who will be embarking on this project moving forward,” says Stephanie Vaillancourt, President, Capital and Operations & Maintenance, SNC-Lavalin.
