AtkinsRéalis’ Nuclear Business Opens Office in Durham Region; Supporting Growing Workforce and Expansion of Nuclear Power in Ontario

Friday 16 February 2024

Montreal: February 16, 2024–Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company [SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.] (TSX: ATRL), announces it will open a new office space in Durham Region, Ontario’s Energy Capital, at 1340 Pickering Parkway in Pickering, Ontario. AtkinsRéalis’ Canadian Nuclear business is in the midst of a sizeable increase in hiring, with many new employees to be based at this location. The new office will support AtkinsRéalis’ work, as the steward of CANDU® nuclear technology, supporting the 10 CANDU reactors producing 34% of Ontario’s power at Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Pickering and Darlington nuclear generating stations. This includes work that AtkinsRéalis is performing on both CANDU reactor refurbishment, and the Darlington New Nuclear SMR program, tasked with bringing online North America’s first grid-scale SMR by 2029. Both stations are located near the new office.

“The opening of this space, the third major office for AtkinsRéalis’ Canadian Nuclear business in Ontario, is an important part of the forward thrust we’re making on our key growth drivers,” said Gary Rose, Executive Vice-President, Nuclear, Canada at AtkinsRéalis. “Top of this list includes supporting the refurbishment at Darlington, as well as engineering support of new nuclear reactors such as the Darlington SMR, while simultaneously servicing OPG’s CANDU fleet set to run to the 2060s, maintaining close and collaborative relationships with our customers, and achieving high retention rates in our workforce while being able to attract new talent as an employer of choice. With an office presence that spans much of Southern Ontario, from Kincardine near our valued customer Bruce Power, to the west end of the GTA in Mississauga, and now to Durham Region in Pickering near OPG, and combined with the availability of remote work days for employees where the job allows, we are proud to give our people the flexibility they need to do their best work for our customers.”

Details of the New Space

  • Connections to Transportation: Easily accessible via both car and public transportation, the building is situated directly next to Highway 401 with extensive parking facilities. It is also seamlessly connected to the Pickering GO Train Station, located right across from the office, via direct access to Pickering's fully enclosed pedestrian bridge- the longest of its kind in the world. Greatly increasing office accessibility to employees looking to avoid the use of a car, GO Train service offers a quick connection to downtown Toronto, as well as to cities west-to-east across the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Sustainability: With a direct public transportation connection, the new space will save an estimated 654,000 kg of CO2 emissions per year, in line with AtkinsRéalis’ target of Net Zero emissions from business activities by 2030. Demonstrating the Company’s commitment to Net Zero, the newly leased office space is housed in a sustainable, LEED Gold certified building.
  • Nearby Amenities: With the Pickering Town Centre located next door, the new space will provide employees with access to a large selection of premium shops, restaurants, and other amenities, while providing significant economic benefits to Durham Region.
  • Contemporary Working Space: Inside the modern space, employees will enjoy an open, bright environment with floor-to-ceiling windows, and various features to promote wellbeing and vibrancy. Activity-based spaces have been specifically designed to allow employees to work in the ways they need to; both for focused deep-thinking, as well as collaborative problem-solving. Compelling work environments are a critical component of attracting and retaining the top talent needed to execute some of Canada’s largest energy infrastructure projects.
