BELO HORIZONTE MG, Brazil: July 20, 2023 - SNC-Lavalin, a fully integrated professional services and project management company with offices around the world, has received a Hexagon Elite First Place for Best in Sustainability Award, for its work on the Salobo III project in Carajás, Pará, Brazil. The SNC-Lavalin team in Brazil designed, engineered and supported construction of the USD $1.5 billion phase three expansion of the Salobo copper mine located in one of the country’s most prolific mining districts.
“SNC-Lavalin’s engineering expertise combined with our comprehensive construction management approach delivers high-performing mining facilities that enable our clients to achieve their business objectives,” said Maria de Lourdes Bahia, SNC-Lavalin Mining & Metallurgy Vice-President, Latin America. “Receiving the Hexagon Elite Award for Sustainability, is proof positive we can produce tangible results while satisfying our global commitments to Engineering Net Zero and digital innovation.”
Owned and operated by Vale, the world’s top iron ore miner, the expanded open-pit Salobo mine now has the capacity to extract 200,000 tons of copper annually. Copper is the third-most-consumed industrial metal in the world. An excellent conductor of electricity and heat, copper has many uses including electrical wiring and its essential to electric vehicle (EV) technology. The operational life of the Salobo mine is estimated to be through 2044.
SNC-Lavalin’s used Hexagon’s Smart Plant PID, Smart Plant Electrical, Smart Plant Instrumentation and Smart 3D tools to develop the facility. Integrating these tools into the design and construction process increased productivity and efficiency while also reducing construction and demolition waste. Data can be added during the operational phase too, improving SNC-Lavalin’s asset management capabilities. Hexagon is a global leader in digital reality and autonomous solutions, combining sensor, software and autonomous technologies.
“Hexagon’s tools allowed us to create paperless 3D shop drawings and virtual reality and augmented reality construction simulations to improve workflow and scheduling,” said Arley Costa, SNC-Lavalin Mining & Metallurgy Senior Manager of Digital Solutions. “These innovations allowed our team to develop solutions in a safe and controlled environment, limiting issues in the real world.”
