TAMPA, Fla, USA: Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, was recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) for its lead role on several projects during the ACEC’s virtual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) gala held December 1, widely known as the “Academy Awards” of the engineering industry.
The Atkins-designed Manning Crevice Bridge project was awarded a prestigious Grand Award, which recognizes preeminent engineering achievements throughout the nation. The $9.64 million, 300-foot asymmetrical bridge over the Salmon River near Riggins, Idaho, is the first bridge in North America constructed as a single-tower asymmetrical roadway suspension bridge. The bridge improves access and safety for property owners in Idaho County as well as recreational users of the Pearce-Clearwater National Forest. The bridge was funded by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration Western Federal Lands Division.
Other Atkins projects recognized during this year’s EEA gala include:
Renew Atlanta TSPLOST Program: Since 2016, Atkins has provided program management support services for the Renew Atlanta TSPLOST Program, a $540 million capital improvement program created to help address the $1 billion infrastructure backlog facing the City of Atlanta. Atkins was awarded an EEA by the ACEC Georgia Chapter in September 2020.
I-25 Ilex Design-Build (D-B) Project: The I-25 Ilex to 1st Street project replaced a 50-year-old highway segment as part of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s New Pueblo Freeway, which aims to improve mobility through the City of Pueblo. Atkins was owner’s representative, responsible for review and acceptance of all work including construction, design, traffic management and environmental. Atkins and Pinyon Environmental received an ACEC Colorado EEA – Environmental Category in November 2019.
“Being recognized by the ACEC through its prestigious Engineering Excellence Awards is one of highest honors a firm can achieve in our industry,” said Ken Burns, Chief Operating Officer, Atkins North America. “I want to congratulate our Atkins team members, partners and clients who worked so hard to deliver these iconic projects which are already having positive impacts on major civic, social and economic elements of the communities we serve.”
