PUEBLO, Colo., USA: Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, is part of the team led by ENSCO, Inc. selected by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to provide research and development, testing, engineering and training services at its Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colorado, and help establish the TTC as a center for integrating rail, ground and air transportation innovation.
“For nearly 60 years, we have provided rail and transit engineering and program management services for an array of federal, state and local agencies,” said George Nash, CEO, Atkins North America. “Our team will bring global expertise of rail and transit infrastructure to help FRA maintain its state-of-the-art research and test capabilities to support the development of next generation rail and ground transportation technologies.”
As a key subconsultant on the team under the $571 million FRA TTC contract, Atkins will help transform the technology center to support the U.S. Department of Transportation’s mission to integrate all transportation modes, drive technological innovation, encourage positive change and create opportunity.
“The U.S. transportation industry is experiencing a quantum shift with the development of high-speed rail, autonomous vehicles, positive train control and other innovations that have the potential to revolutionize transport,” said J.R. Steele, Federal Business Unit Director, Atkins North America. “We are excited to bring our world-class knowledge of rail and transit infrastructure to the ENSCO team.”
The TTC is a government-owned transportation research, testing and training facility. Since its opening in 1971, the TTC has played a pivotal role in research, development and testing of rail infrastructure and equipment, including Amtrak’s Acela Train. The facility features 50 miles of test track, including a 13.5-mile-long railroad track used for high-speed testing up to 165 miles per hour.
Atkins recently partnered with ENSCO to provide the FRA with positive train control safety support and was selected by the Federal Transit Administration to be program management oversight contractor for Phase II of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit Silicon Valley Extension project.
