HENDERSON, Nev., USA: Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, has been selected by the City of Henderson, Nevada to complete a multimodal redesign of Boulder Highway. Under the 12-month contract, Atkins’ design and engineering services will work with the City of Henderson to help enhance safety and improve mobility for all roadway users of this legacy highway.
“Combining traditional engineering principles with state-of-the-art technologies to deliver safe and reliable infrastructure that benefits all users, is how we create the greatest value for our clients,” said Steve Morriss, President, Engineering Services, U.S., Latin America, Asia Pacific and Mining & Minerals, Atkins. “This project positively impacts the entire area; we are excited to help make it a reality.”
The project’s 7.5-mile stretch of Boulder Highway is considered to be Nevada’s most dangerous roadway. The highway will be reimagined to provide center running bus rapid transit lanes (BRT) and transit stops, dedicated bicycle lanes on both sides of the roadway, completed sidewalks with safety improvements including mid-block crossings, pedestrian ramps and street lighting. An Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), smart cities infrastructure, traffic signal replacements and utility adjustments highlight the technological advancements planned for the corridor. Local flood control upgrades and accommodations for drought-tolerant landscaping will complete the thoroughfare’s transformation.
“Henderson is ready for these enhancements,” said Paul Demit, Atkins Community & Intermodal Infrastructure Business Unit Director. “Our team modeled the Boulder Highway of the future, allowing stakeholders to envision the complete streets and what a tremendously positive impact they’ll have. It’s rewarding to see our work be embraced by the community.”
Atkins has a strong presence in Nevada with a well-earned reputation of delivering some of Nevada’s most challenging projects including managing all design and engineering services for the $1 billion Project NEON, I-80 design-build freeway reconstruction, the 35-mile I-15 widening and design services for the $335 million Tropicana Avenue/I-15 interchange and the Carson City Freeway.
