MONTREAL – March 12, 2024 – AtkinsRéalis, a fully integrated professional services project management company with offices around the world, announced that it has been selected by the Regional Municipality of York to provide detailed design, contract administration and inspection services to widen Warden Avenue, which will enhance mobility in the City of Markham.

“An efficient and sustainable transportation network plays a critical role in improving mobility and enhancing accessibility for commuters. The work being undertaken will not only fix the challenges created by congested roadways in York Region, but it will also make it easier for residents to access essential services, businesses, and recreational spaces. This work supports our commitment to delivering excellence in infrastructure development and to creating a positive impact on communities across Canada,” says Stephanie Vaillancourt, President, Canada of AtkinsRéalis.

Prolonged commute, increased air pollution, and heightened stress levels associated with congested roadways can have a profound impact on the quality of life for individuals and families. The widening of Warden Avenue, between Major Mackenzie Drive and Elgin Mills Road, from a two-lane rural road to a four-lane urban cross-section will improve current infrastructures, help ease future traffic congestion tied to development plans in neighboring areas and promote safer travel conditions for all.

The roadway project will include several improvements, namely a storm sewer system draining into box trench Low Impact Development (LID) features, upgraded intersections at Major Mackenzie Drive and Elgin Mills Road to be Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) compliant, a structural box culvert, cycle tracks, sidewalks, streetscaping, and tree plantings within the boulevards on both sides of the road.

“AtkinsRéalis has a long history working with York Region. We bring a wealth of experience and expertise, as well as  a proven track record of delivering successful infrastructure projects. Furthermore, our dedication to sustainable cities ensures that the project will be executed with the utmost consideration of environmental impacts and long-term community benefits,” said Patrick Aubin, Market Lead, Cities & development, Canada at AtkinsRéalis. “We look forward to collaborating with York Region, the City of Markham, local stakeholders, and government agencies to ensure a seamless and successful implementation of the project.”

The scope of AtkinsRéalis’ mandate will include engineering services for detailed design, site investigations, utility coordination, permits and approvals, coordination with stakeholders, tender support, and construction administration and site inspection services during the construction of the project in York Region.
