AtkinsRéalis to strengthen RFC Power energy storage technology scale-up plans

Thursday 30 May 2024

Energy storage developer RFC Power has signed an agreement with world-leading professional services and project management company AtkinsRéalis to provide engineering analysis and support in its development of their globally patented long-duration flow battery technology.

AtkinsRéalis will provide RFC Power with preliminary engineering support including safety and systems design as it seeks to scale up its innovative hybrid redox flow battery to grid scale. Following the recently completed commissioning of a kWh scale demonstration system, RFC Power is now in the planning phase for its first MWh scale pilot system. AtkinsRéalis will bring to the project its global capabilities in energy storage electrical systems design, and significant experience in the development of processes, technology and systems to achieve commercialisation of grid-scale technology.

Gareth Richardson, Technology Lead - Hydrogen and Low Carbon Energy, AtkinsRéalis, said: “Greater volumes of energy storage will be needed to underpin the deployment of renewable power and ensure a clean, secure energy supply for the future. RFC Power’s patented technology has the potential to provide vital long duration storage solutions to ensure security of supply, and we look forward to supporting the RFC team in their mission to develop it further.”

RFC Power has developed a unique, globally patented hydrogen-manganese flow battery chemistry, delivering high round trip efficiency, full capacity utilisation and no capacity fade over the lifetime of the system.

Tim von Werne, CEO of RFC Power added: “RFC Power and AtkinsRéalis share a common goal: advancing clean energy solutions. As we scale up from kWh to MWh and move out of the lab and onto the grid, partnering with a company like AtkinsRealis gives us access to decades of experience in project engineering and system design. Working together will allow RFC Power and AtkinsRealis to accelerate the deployment of long duration energy storage at grid scale and support the transition to a zero-carbon energy system.”
