WASHINGTON, DC., USA: Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, has won an American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Engineering Excellence Award-Grand Award for its work on the Manning Crevice Bridge replacement project, a 300-foot asymmetrical suspension bridge over the Salmon River near Riggins, Idaho.

Atkins was Engineer-of-Record for the unique project, the first bridge in North America constructed as a single-tower asymmetrical roadway suspension bridge. The $9.64 million signature bridge was delivered through a construction manager/general contractor contract and opened to traffic on June 5th, 2018. The bridge improves access and safety for property owners in Idaho County as well as recreational users of the Pearce-Clearwater National Forest.

“Since 1934, the Manning Crevice bridge has provided vital access to tourism and recreation in the Riggins, Idaho area. We are proud to have worked with our partners and our client, the Western Federal Lands Highway Division, to help deliver this innovative and iconic project that is already having a substantial social and economic impact in the region and the state,” said David Konz, Technical Manager, Atkins.

The Manning Crevice Bridge project is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Western Federal Lands Highway Division, Idaho County, and the U.S. Forestry Service. Funding for the bridge replacement was provided by the Idaho Transportation Department’s Statewide Transportation Improvement Program and the Idaho Forest Highway program.

Known as the “Academy Awards” for the engineering industry, the ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards recognize preeminent engineering achievements throughout the world. As one of 16 Grand Award winners, Atkins is in consideration for the Grand Conceptor award, which will be revealed at ACEC’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards gala this fall.

Atkins also earned several other awards recognizing the Manning Crevice bridge project, including:

  • 2020 AISC-NSBC Prize Bridge Award
  • 2019 ENR Mountain States Best Project Award (Under $10 million)
  • 2018 ACEC of Idaho Engineering Excellence Award – 1st Place for Category C (Structural Systems)
