MONTREAL: March 23, 2020 - SNC-Lavalin has been awarded a multi-million-dollar contract from Birla Carbon U.S.A., Inc. for the Air Quality Control Upgrade project at its North Bend Plant near Centerville, Louisiana. The Power, Grid and Industrial Solutions business unit will provide detailed engineering, procurement, project management, construction and commissioning management (EPCM) services for the project. This contract win is aligned with the company’s new strategy moving forward to greater growth and sustainability.
To fulfill its commitment to control emissions in compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) national enforcement initiative, Birla Carbon agreed to further reduce emissions of nitrous oxide, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter from its U.S. carbon black plants with advanced control technologies and continuous emissions monitoring systems.
“We look forward to providing our services and technologies to help reduce air emissions for one of the world’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of high-quality carbon black,” said Dale Clarke, Executive Vice-President, Infrastructure Services, SNC-Lavalin. “SNC-Lavalin is committed to protecting the environment for future generations and we’re thrilled to be involved in a project that is aimed at achieving cleaner, sustainable operations.”
The plant consists of two incinerators used to thermally process tail gas from the carbon black manufacturing process. Upgrades will include new air quality control equipment, which will remove emissions from the exhaust. Major equipment for nitrogen oxides reduction includes Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems with inlet duct burners, catalyst, ammonia injection grid and soot blowers. For reducing sulfur dioxide, a wet scrubber (absorber) system will be installed. The air quality control equipment will be operational by the fall of 2021.
