LAS VEGAS, Nev., USA: Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, has been awarded a contract to provide professional engineering services associated with the Lower Las Vegas Wash Stabilization Project by the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA). The purpose of the project is to protect existing infrastructure by slowing and preventing channel degradation through the construction of new grade control structures on the Lower Las Vegas Wash in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, improving the water quality of the lake.
“The Las Vegas Wash is a critical component of water resource management for southern Nevada, and with Lake Mead levels at historic lows, slowing the Wash’s high rate of erosion and channel degradation is crucial for protecting water quality for millions of Americans,” said Matt Wilkinson, Atkins Project Manager. “Our team is committed to providing comprehensive services to cover the project’s lifecycle, helping manage this finite resource for long-term resilience, sustainability and reliability, while meeting the needs of this community and environmentally sensitive National Park Service land.”
The Las Vegas Wash, in Clark County, Nevada, is the primary drainage of the Las Vegas Valley, carrying urban runoff, treated wastewater and floodwater into Lake Mead and the Colorado River. It serves as a return flow conveyance, safely recycling and returning highly treated wastewater back to Lake Mead and extending the community’s water supply. It is also an important environmental resource, providing wetland habitat that sustains plants and animals that would not otherwise be found in a dry, desert environment.
For more than 25 years, the Company has supported SNWA and the Las Vegas Wash, providing extensive expertise gained from projects of similar size and scope including design services for Truckee River Vista Narrows in Nevada, Lake Havasu Erosion Control Projects in Arizona, Muskrat Fall Hydroelectric Project in Canada and the Santa Clara River Bendway Weirs in California.
