AtkinsRéalis achieves renowned PAS 2080 carbon management standard

Thursday 28 November 2024

London (UK) - AtkinsRéalis, a world-class engineering services and nuclear company with offices around the world, has achieved PAS 2080:2023 verification for carbon management in the UK, demonstrating the company's systematic approach to helping clients reduce their carbon emissions across the entire infrastructure lifecycle.

PAS 2080:2023 is a globally leading standard which provides a robust framework for managing whole life carbon in infrastructure delivery, promoting collaboration across the value chain to drive innovation in low-carbon design, construction and operation. Developed by the British Standards Institute, PAS 2080 verification is granted to an organisation following a comprehensive independent audit.

Jonathan Holyoak, AtkinsRéalis Net Zero Programme Director, said: “We consistently embed carbon reduction principles across our projects and provide our clients with the data and insights required to inform decisions across the lifecycle of an asset, from option development and design through to operation and end of life. The PAS 2080 verification is formal recognition of our efforts to drive continuous improvement in carbon reduction through clear leadership and collaboration with clients, enabling the delivery of sustainable and resilient infrastructure.”

The independent auditors, leading assurance provider LRQA, praised how AtkinsRéalis’ carbon management tools and approaches have been applied to projects in a proportionate and flexible way. Key to this was how the company has embedded carbon management and PAS 2080 principles into its governance, operating model, and roles and responsibilities; including the development and deployment of Carbon Insights, a digital platform which ensures consistency, shared learning and better carbon decisions throughout AtkinsRéalis. The auditors noted AtkinsRéalis had “an excellent standard of implementation across the various projects sampled during this audit, strongly supported by the carbon management system framework provided and supported in the organisation.”

The verification builds on AtkinsRéalis’ established expertise in PAS 2080 requirements. The company consistently draws on PAS 2080 principles while delivering carbon reduction on projects, such as the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier on behalf of the Environment Agency, National Highways’ Lower Thames Crossing and asset enhancement programmes at Heathrow. Additionally, AtkinsRéalis helps clients to achieve PAS 2080 compliance by advising on gap analysis and implementation plans, and developing carbon management systems and manuals, such as supporting HS2 with its PAS 2080 verification.

More broadly, AtkinsRéalis is closely involved in projects which are reducing upfront embodied carbon, such as zero emissions cement and low carbon asphalt trials through National Highways’ SPaTS 2 programme.

Notes to editors:

  • Last year a revised version of PAS 2080 was published to help accelerate decarbonisation in the built environment. AtkinsRéalis had representation on the Technical Advisory panel providing guidance on the  update.
