SNC-Lavalin receives the prestigious Schreyer Award and Award of Excellence for Samuel De Champlain Bridge Project

MONTREAL: October 30, 2020 - SNC-Lavalin, on behalf of Signature on the Saint Lawrence (SSL) Group, is pleased to announce that it received the Award of Excellence in the 2020 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards’ technical, transportation category for the Samuel De Champlain Bridge project. The project was also honoured with an additional Special Achievement Award, the prestigious Schreyer Award, for demonstrating the highest degree of technical merit and innovation. The old Champlain Bridge was replaced with a new 3.4 kilometre cable-stayed design comprised of three separate decks supported by 37 piers with a 170 metre high tower. The awards were presented by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Canada (ACEC-Canada) and Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine.

“This project was very complex in terms of technical challenges and coordination for all involved,” said Robert Landry, Senior Vice-President, Eastern Canada, EDPM at SNC-Lavalin. “Thanks to this achievement, the commute to and from the Island of Montreal on the Samuel De Champlain Bridge is now a treat and it is wonderful to see all users appreciate this beautiful bridge. I salute the committed efforts of all contributors to this project. We can be very proud of the collective success achieved for this unique infrastructure that is already recognized around the world.”

The Samuel De Champlain Bridge project was carried out through a public-private partnership agreement with the Government of Canada and the SSL Group. As part of the SSL Group, SNC-Lavalin and design and construction partners ACS and HOCHTIEF were responsible for the design, construction, financing, operations, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the new bridge for a period of 30 years.

“The Samuel De Champlain Bridge has become a Montreal landmark that will be part of the cityscape for the next 125 years and we are proud to win the Schreyer Award and Award of Excellence to acknowledge such a remarkable feat,” said Richard Munday, Construction Director at SNC-Lavalin assigned to the project.  “Credit belongs to our talented employees, SSL and all the partners that paved the way for sustainable engineering, delivering a defining build for Montreal. Thank you Infrastructure Canada for the trust and journey.”

The Samuel De Champlain Bridge is comprised of six traffic lanes, a corridor dedicated to light rail transit and a multi-purpose path for pedestrians and cyclists. It serves as the primary link to Montreal’s metropolitan region and functions as a crucial transport corridor between Canada and the United States. To meet an accelerated schedule, teams innovated in their practices, material selection and monitoring. This included maximizing the prefabrication of concrete elements and assembly of steel elements, and the construction of temporary jetties with high-performance docks geared for marine access.

Several unique pieces and measures were executed to maximize on-site efficiency and minimize the impact of the construction on the environment, including:

  • An industrial catamaran for transporting and installing footings and pier starters directly to the bottom of the river within allowable tolerances;
  • A winch barge to transport heavy parts in the strong river currents;
  • Construction of three fish passages in the fluvial jetty for species migration;
  • Use of biodegradable and bio-sourced hydraulic oils for devices working on or near the watercourse;
  • Compensation program for greenhouse gas emissions.

The Samuel De Champlain Bridge opened to traffic in Summer 2019 and is one of North America’s busiest spans with 50 million vehicles crossing each year.
