Auckland, New Zealand, November 07, 2022 –SNC-Lavalin, a fully integrated professional services and project management company with offices around the world, has been awarded an operations and maintenance (O&M) advisory services contract to support the development of the Auckland Light Rail project, New Zealand, which is set to transform the way Aucklanders get around their city and help reduce the city’s carbon footprint through more sustainable growth.
As part of the two-year contract, SNC-Lavalin will work with the Auckland Light Rail (ALR) alliance - including Aurecon and Arup as preferred bidders - on developing an ALR route and proposed locations of up to 18 stations as part of developing the project’s final Business Case, and through the pre-construction planning phase to develop the way light rail is to be operated and maintained when open. This will cover developing O&M concepts - including full service and timetable development, fleet and depot planning, licensing strategy and interfacing with other major projects in development of an integrated transport plan - to ensure efficient and reliable long-term network operations.
“As a leader in engineering services and project management consultancy, we are committed to help our clients reduce their carbon emissions by providing our global expertise in Net Zero solutions and best practices,” commented Tom Hasker, Chief Executive Office, New Zealand & Australia, SNC-Lavalin. “This contract represents a significant win for the company that will support our ongoing business growth in New Zealand. We are proud to support Auckland Light Rail Group with this major project that will transform public transport in the city and enhance the quality of life for its people Through our operations and maintenance expertise, we look forward to delivering the project to the highest quality, safety, and sustainability standards.”
Rapid transit is a key transport priority for Auckland - a critical investment to develop a modern, connected, high capacity transport system in New Zealand’s largest city, supporting jobs, growth, and housing. The Auckland Light Rail project aims to implement a rapid transit service that is attractive, reliable, frequent, safe, integrated with the current and future active and public transport, and to unlock significant urban development that caters to the city’s increased population. It will start with light rail from the City Centre to Māngere, an area that will be home to 17% of Auckland’s future population growth and 33% of job growth over the next 30 years.
Globally, SNC-Lavalin has developed the ‘Engineering Net Zero’ (ENZ) program, which focuses on leading the engineering industry to achieve Net Zero Carbon as rapidly as possible, by helping clients manage climate risks and build climate resilience. In September 2022, the Company released its 2021 Sustainability report, titled Our Vision for Engineering a Sustainable Society. The report measures the Company’s progress made against existing ESG targets, as well as detailing the enhanced commitments made in 2021. In Asia Pacific region, SNC-Lavalin has supported clients in transportation and infrastructure sectors by providing its engineering services underpinned by digital and net zero solutions, including the Cross River Rail, Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail, Sydney Metro and Canberra Light Rail projects in Australia.
