Welcoming today’s announcement by UK Government to invest in Sizewell C and progress the Energy Bill to boost energy independence, Christophe Junillon, MD of Nuclear & Power EMEA, SNC Lavalin, said:
Sizewell C
“Today’s Government Investment Decision is a major milestone for Sizewell C, moving the project one step closer towards construction and maintaining nuclear’s position as a cornerstone in the UK’s net zero energy strategy. Net zero needs nuclear to create a resilient and reliable system that will power our future energy needs and ensure security of supply in the UK for decades to come.
“Sizewell C will be one of the UK’s biggest engineering projects: today’s announcement not only paves the way for the creation of thousands of jobs during its construction but also maintains momentum towards a fleet-approach to new nuclear build in the UK. The smooth transfer of learnings and supply chains from Hinkley Point C onto Sizewell C will be vital to deliver the project’s cost and efficiency savings and we look forward to playing our part in helping to realise these goals over the coming years.”
Improving Britain’s energy independence through the Energy Bill
“The UK requires an immense energy construction programme over the next two decades. Atkins’ recent analysis found that the UK must build five times the current rate of new energy generation to meet its goal to decarbonise power by 2035: creating the certainty to bring forward investment is critical. We welcome the commitment to establish Great British Nuclear to specifically oversee the development of new nuclear, as well as the creation of a Future System Operator to coordinate such a major programme across all available technology. These bodies will be essential to create a resilient, decarbonised power grid in the most efficient and cost-effective way. The energy transition is critically important to the UK’s future: moving at pace to provide long-term certainty and accelerate the build rate of new generation must be the primary focus as the Energy Bill progresses.”
