AtkinsRéalis Hosts Industry Day for CANDU Nuclear Supply Chain in Support of Upcoming New Builds

Thursday 12 October 2023

MONTREAL: October 12, 2023 – Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company [SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.] (TSX: ATRL), hosted a well-attended Industry Day on October 11th in Toronto for the CANDU® nuclear supply chain, in partnership with the Organization of Canadian Nuclear industries (OCNI). The event was attended by roughly 90 companies across an entire CANDU technology supply chain, which spans 76,000 people in total. AtkinsRéalis is the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of Canada’s CANDU technology.

Supply chain partners had an opportunity to learn and interact with AtkinsRéalis about how they can be involved in over-the-horizon CANDU new build & life-extension projects in Canada and globally, as well as the development and deployment of AtkinsRéalis’ new, larger output, Gen III+ 1,000 MW CANDU reactor. The new CANDU reactor will help countries achieve energy security while meeting Net Zero carbon reduction goals. AtkinsRéalis’ partnerships with key Canadian suppliers is a part of what makes CANDU technology unique and valuable to Canada’s national interest. Over 85% of the materials required for a CANDU reactor are manufactured in Canada.

“Big infrastructure projects, particularly nuclear new builds and refurbishments, require rigorous advanced planning in order to be successfully executed,” said Gary Rose, Executive Vice-President, Canada, Nuclear at AtkinsRéalis. “This includes maintaining a strong and agile supply chain of qualified, reliable suppliers. With a burgeoning market over the next 30 years for nuclear new builds, we know that our supply chain has limited labour and resources to allocate to that addressable market. It’s up to us, as the OEM of CANDU technology, to show them why working on CANDU reactor projects provide the most attractive opportunities for them, their shareholders, and their employees. As the steward of the only fully licenced nuclear technology in Canada, and a technology that was designed to lean heavily inward on a Canadian supply chain for energy security, we are absolutely convinced that we have a strong case to make on this front.”

AtkinsRéalis organized the event with support from the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries and was pleased to reaffirm the support of the Canadian Nuclear Association for CANDU technology.

A selection of participants at AtkinsRéalis’ CANDU industry day included:

  • Todd Smith, Minister of Energy, Ontario
  • Gary Rose, Executive Vice-President, Canada, Nuclear, AtkinsRéalis

CANDU Technology’s Growth Outlook Globally

To meet rising electricity demands, driven by a convergence of factors including emissions reductions targets, increasing electrification of industries, population growth, and energy security goals, the global nuclear power market is experiencing its strongest demand of the 21st century. This sustained demand will last well into the second half of the century, and presents an attractive opportunity for CANDU technology. This includes reactor new builds and life extensions, including at Bruce Power, Pickering, Darlington, South Korea, Romania, China, Argentina, and more.

CANDU technology is one of Canada’s most successful commercial products; a homegrown solution to solving its growing domestic energy needs, while competing on the global stage through export opportunities. CANDU reactors are one of only a handful of large reactor technologies available from the Western world. Its many unique features among large reactor technologies in the world include its use of natural (unenriched) uranium, production of cancer-fighting medical isotopes while simultaneously producing power, the ability to be refuelled online, and holding the record for the highest capacity factor of any nuclear reactor in the world (via one of Romania’s two CANDU reactors).

The last seven CANDU reactors built around the world have been deployed on-time and on-budget. CANDU technology is the only Western-developed nuclear technology deployed in Eastern Europe. It’s also the exclusively used nuclear technology in Canada, including at the world’s largest operating nuclear facility at Bruce Power in Ontario, and at Ontario Power Generation’s nuclear sites.
