AtkinsRéalis has been awarded a contract with Sizewell C to design elements of the main nuclear power station site in Suffolk as part of its ongoing multi-disciplinary service agreement (MSA) with the project.
The design work spans the Conventional Island, Balance of Plant and Heat Sink of the proposed new power station, as well as concept design for permanent roads and networks that will support the construction and long-term operation of the site, including upgrades to the Sizewell Branch Line and the development of the new Green Rail Route that will be used to bring workers and materials to the site.
Joe St. Julian, President, Nuclear, AtkinsRéalis, said: “Nuclear technology is critical to accelerating the global energy transition by providing clean, efficient and stable base-load power, while also bolstering energy security for both the UK and the rest of the world. Our ongoing work with Sizewell C will continue to support these important objectives in the UK, at a time when the government has renewed its commitment to the project.”
AtkinsRéalis is a key delivery partner for EDF Energy’s existing nuclear fleet and Hinkley Point C in Somerset in addition to its work supporting Sizewell C since 2014; for these design works,
AtkinsRéalis will rely on the use of digital tools and proven processes to drive design efficiencies and maximise replication from Hinkley Point C, supporting Sizewell C’s goal to reduce the cost of construction for the project.
Chris Conboy, Managing Director - EMEA, Nuclear & Power at AtkinsRéalis, said: “This appointment represents a significant and exciting programme of design works for AtkinsRéalis and builds on the work we have been delivered on Sizewell C for almost a decade. We look forward to combining our experience in the nuclear sector with extensive learnings from Hinkley Point C to maximise opportunities for replication, drive efficiency and help reduce delivery costs.”
Once completed, the proposed Sizewell C nuclear power station could generate enough low-carbon electricity to supply six million homes for 60 years. The project will also create thousands of local jobs and contribute around £4billion to the regional economy.
AtkinsRéalis has extensive global nuclear expertise providing end-to-end solutions across the full nuclear life cycle. This includes nuclear new builds, plant operations, reactor life extension & late life management, as well as site decommissioning & remediation works. In the UK, the firm supports EDF’s operational fleet and new build programme, including design & civil, mechanical, electrical, process and nuclear engineering support for the end-to-end development of Hinkley Point C and enabling works at the planned Sizewell C site.
